A Word To The Wise, Why Are Keywords So Important? By: Andy West

Keywords. For a word that was essentially introduced to the English vernacular only a decade ago, it sure has become a part of our everyday vocabulary.

How many times have you sat in front of a computer, loaded up Google, and then tried to think of the best words to describe the information you are seeking? In fact, you’ve probably gotten quite efficient at running searches on the web. It is estimated that 91,000,000 searches are conducted each day on Google and 213,000,000 total on the web. But you wouldn’t get very far without the correct keywords.

In the simplest terms, a “keyword” is any word that appears on a webpage. Useful keywords, or phrases, refer to the subject or content of the site… the words used to describe the information you seek.

The process begins when you type this useful word or phrase into a search engine site such as Google, Yahoo!, MSN, etc. It is then up to the search engine to index all of the words that may be significant. Some of the engines index each word on each page, while others index a portion of the document. But the end result is always your list of related sites, ranked by relevance and typically with useful sponsored search results available as well.

Are Keywords Really that Important to a Site’s Success This question leads to the million-dollar question: How important are keywords to your website anyway? In all honestly, they can make you… or break you. Good keyword research is the foundation of any website. Without the appropriate keywords, no one will find your site. Even if you spent thousands of dollars to make it look snazzy. Even if you conducted years of research to get your online business going. Even if you are offering the absolute best product in the history of mankind. If you aren’t making the most of your keywords, there’s a very good chance that your site isn’t generating nearly the amount of traffic it should. Of course, less traffic to your site means less money in your pocket.

Luckily, you don’t need to be a web guru to make sure that you are getting the most out of your keywords. There are a number of useful products on the market that can easily assist you with this process. Instant Keyword Research or Keyword Elite are two available programs that literally cut down your keyword research time from hours to seconds. Products like these allow for greater optimization, higher rankings on search engines, and increased traffic by identifying these useful keywords for you.

With the advent of Google, came a whole new way of conducting online business. People were introduced to an entirely new concept in terms of pay-per-click advertising. Websites could now generate additional income through Adsense or secure greater exposure through sponsored searches. Certainly, the technology existed before, but Google really took it to the next level and opened new doors of opportunity to entrepreneurial-spirited men and women.

The beauty of keyword research products is that they focus on increasing your rankings in organic search engines and sponsored searches AND increasing your success with Adsense. Keyword Explosion is one such product that is targeted mostly to Adsense Publishers, providing information on profitable keywords; while there are others, like Instant Keyword Research mentioned earlier, that are more comprehensive.

If you are in the process of launching your online business, or even if you already have one, stop a moment and consider… are you getting your fair share of the 6.6 billion Internet users worldwide? Remember that there is a whole world of opportunity out there. It’s one that you might be missing if you aren’t properly equipped. And identifying your most powerful keywords is the best place to start.
