10 Tips for Cutting Food Expenses on the Road By: www.lowfares.com

There are times when you can’t avoid eating out – particularly when you are on the road. Business trips, conventions, and training seminars often force you into the surrounding restaurants for your daily sustenance. Even though you have to eat out, you can still find ways to get the most "bang for your buck."

1. Stay at a hotel that offers breakfast in house. Be sure to take some extra fruit to your room for snack through out the day (or later that night.

2. Make lunch your big meal of the day. Choose a restaurant that has never ending salad or a salad bar with your entrée. Have the salad for lunch and save the entrée for dinner later that night.

3. Portions these days are huge. Go to out to eat with a friend and split the meal (and the cost).

4. Take advantage of the services provided by the event you are attending. Find out ahead of time if any meals will be provide or what treats will be offered. You can plan your meals around the treats that are provided for free.

5. Eat outside the hotel if you are going to have to pay. Unless the hotel offers discounts to guests then you will probably find much better deals at the local diners or even national chains in the area.

6. Happy hour isn’t just for drinks. Most clubs and bars offer some great finger foods within a given time. Pay the cover and enjoy an early supper complete with live entertainment.

7. Drink water. There are few places that charge for water these days. You will be amazed at how much you can save just choosing this free beverage.

8. Avoid red meat and seafood. Where ever you eat, these are typically the highest price meals on the menu. Stick to the chicken, pasta or vegetables to keep the cost down.

9. Have breakfast – for dinner or lunch. Breakfast is always one of the least expensive meals of the day.

10. Choose lodging that offers suite benefits (mini-fridge and microwave). This way you have a place to save your snacks and warm your leftovers.

Eating out while you are on the road doesn’t have to cost you an arm or a leg. Making some wise choices and taking full advantages of the opportunities around you will help you keep your eating expenses at a minimum.
