Knowhow-Now Article

In some ways, Copenhagen has long been a hidden gem of Northern Europe - a city often overlooked on the tourism circuit and typically more associated with business travel. But a growing culture scene, an increasing population and improved transport links to Sweden and elsewhere have boosted the image and appeal of Denmark's historic capital, which can now proudly take its place among the great European city break destinations.

Copenhagen has come a long way from the small fishing village that was first established more than a thousand years ago, and every stage of the city's development - from its fortification in 1167 to its royal status in 1660 and beyond - is clear to see in surviving buildings and monuments.

Key sites of interest for history lovers include the Round Tower and Stock Exchange, which date back to the 17th century, and even walking through the medieval streets and admiring the quaint old buildings can be a remarkable experience in itself - especially if you're visiting from a country that lacks comparable history.

More historical discoveries await when making popular treks such as the circular walk from Kongens Nytorv to the Rosenborg gardens, taking in sights such as the Amalienborg royal palaces. The canal-side district of Nyhavn is not to be missed either, housing both historical and modern attractions. There's more history and culture to be enjoyed when visiting Copenhagen's museums and art galleries too, which are renowned for featuring the work of such prominent native artists as Christen Købke and many artefacts from the Danish Golden Age of painting.

A trip to Copenhagen doesn't have to be all about history though, and there are many places to let your hair down and dance the night away if the mood takes you, especially in the Nyhavn area. For something more cultural, the dockside area is home to some of Copenhagen's esteemed opera houses and theatres, and you'll never be too far away from fine dining opportunities wherever you're staying in the city.

The time of year you arrive in Copenhagen could also help you get more out of your visit, with popular events such as the Whitsun Carnival drawing large crowds each May. If you're planning on visiting Copenhagen to experience such festivities first-hand, making sure you arrange your hotel Copenhagen ahead of time, it could help you secure a convenient location and find the best deals for your stay in Denmark's capital.
