Dispelling Some Myths About Cancer

A diagnosis of cancer can be mind-numbing, whether you or someone you love is the patient. In years past cancer was a death sentence, but medical advances and greatly increased knowledge about the disease have improved the prognosis of anyone diagnosed with it. Some of the most common myths about cancer have no basis, and nobody should worry needlessly.
Whether it is safe to eat meat depends pretty much on the type of meat you eat. Probably the worst choice you could make would be a hamburger with high fat content which has been grilled to the charred state over charcoal. Burning meat does create carcinogens, and consuming high fat beef which has been raised using chemical growth hormones is very unhealthy. On the other hand, eating lean cuts of chicken, pork and fish is safe even if it is grilled, so long as it is not charred or burnt. You should limit your consumption of beef to no more than once each week, and attempt to include wild caught salmon in your diet at least once every week.
Skin cancer can be one of the worst types of cancer to treat, and protecting your skin from the suns harmful rays is the best way to avoid it. Sunscreens have evolved over the past several years to more fully protect the skin. Make sure to use a sunscreen which protects against both UVA and UVB rays, and which also stays on in water. Do not depend on the protective lotion staying on all day if you are in and out of the water or perspiring heavily. Many sunscreens come in a convenient spray container, and it is easy to quickly spray yourself again. If you have a light complexion with blue or green eyes, you should use a sunscreen with with a sun protection factor of at least 45 or above.
Avoid inhaling any chemical spray, or getting it on your skin. If you do end up with any strong chemical on your skin, wash the area with soap and water thoroughly and as quickly as possible. Some of these chemicals can cause cancer, but whether they do or not, it is best to avoid contact as much as possible.
Smoking has been proven to cause lung cancer, and can also cause cancer in the mouth area. If you live in a polluted city, that can also cause lung cancer, but not to the extent of inhaling nicotine laden smoke into your lungs on a regular basis. If you are a smoker, make every attempt to quit smoking as soon as possible.
There has been some suspicion that cell phones could cause brain cancer, but the jury is still out on this. It would seem that unless you are holding a cell phone to your ear every hour of the day, there may be some risk. This is probably not anything to be concerned about. If you are concerned about it, use the speaker on your phone so it is not held near your head.
There is a lot of misinformation about cancer that you can hear about, but sort out the truth from fiction by talking to your doctor and doing research on your own. A diagnosis of cancer creates enough worry already without stressing yourself about inaccuracies that have been proven false.
