When you introduce a new pet into your life it is quite an exciting time. Puppy love is the best, but once the honeymoon stage is over, it can be chaos if your new pal is not properly trained. It can be a little difficult to train a dog, but with a few tips, you can make your efforts more successful. Continue reading to learn some things you can do to help make your new puppy one that is obedient.
First of all, you will need to be consistent with your actions and with your words. Pick words you will use as commands and make sure that everyone that deals with the dog uses these same words when they want the dog to obey a command. There are pretty common commands like sit and stay, but you may want your dog to do other things for you and your training will be more successful if you consistently use the same command words. Your actions should be consistent, too. If you do not allow your dog on the furniture, do not ever allow him up on a piece of furniture or you will confuse him.
Use positive reinforcement with your puppy. When your puppy displays a desired behavior, show him how happy you are about it. Sometimes simply telling him, "good job!" will make him happy, but other times you may choose to give him a hug or a small treat. Instead of yelling and screaming at him when he does something wrong, praise him when he does something right.
You should start training your dog as soon as possible. The younger your dog is, the easier he will take to your training. If you get an older dog, he can still be trained, but it will take a little more time.
Set aside time each day for your training. With a super young puppy, you may need two or three short time periods to train them. Young puppies do not have very long attention spans and your training sessions with them should be quite short, maybe five or ten minutes, working up to more time as they become ready. It is important that your dog is ready during this time, too. Do not schedule your time for training when your puppy usually naps or is at his most hyper.
In your training, be firm. You will want to use a voice that means business, but not be so mean that your dog is scared. They should know what your training voice is and you should consistently use this during your training time and anytime you want your dog to follow your order. If you use this voice each time, it will be easier on you and your dog and he will know that he is expected to listen and behave.
A dog is a great addition to your family, but having one that is well trained is even better. Use these tips and you can make sure your time with your new friend is enjoyable.
