There are several tools available to assist you in making an informed decision when selecting the right airline to meet your wants and needs.

To begin, it is important to compare the seat pitch and width dimensions.   Seat pitch and width can vary greatly between different air travel companies.*

It is also helping to always look beyond the price when arranging air transportation.  Sure the cost of the ticket is important, but often times for a few dollars more you can get a much better seat on an airline with superior amenities making your journey much more enjoyable overall.

One should also compare seat availability when booking a flight.  Most major airlines allow you to see the seats currently available when making a reservation.  Be sure to compare the seat availability on a variety of different airlines when shopping around for the right flight for you. 

Be sure to select your seat at the time you reserve your tickets.  To get your choice, it is important to select your seat as soon as possible.  Most booking engines and airlines allow you to select your seat at the time of making your ticket purchase.  If for some reason that option is not available online, but sure to call the airline directly to reserve your seat as soon as possible. 

It is also important to confirm your seat assignment the week before your departure.  Airlines often switch the aircraft type close to the departure date and the seats are then reassigned.  You may not have the seat you want under that reassignment, so it is important to check the website and select a new seat.

When checking in at the gate be sure to ask if there are any preferred seats available.  At the gate often times agents upgrade passengers with elite status or ones who are flying full fare.  Often times these persons have preferred seats booked which become open when they are upgraded to Business or First Class cabins.

Last but not least, if you are a frequent flier consider obtaining elite customer status with the airlines.  Consider booking using only one airline so you can get enough air miles to qualify for an upgraded status.  Often times, customers with elite status can pre-book preferred seats  enabling exit row and bulkhead seating to be reserved in advance of the day of the flight.
