Knowhow-Now Article

In the UK there is an abundant of locations for fishing, some of the more highly regarded salmon fishing locations being on your doorstep.

Of course Scotland is commended as one of the most renowned salmon fishing areas, but regions like Devon,Derbyshire and the Yorkshire Dales are extremely popular too.

Once you get to the idyllic location, how do you begin? Catching salmon is a lot different than normal fishing. The team from Ocean Tackle Store have provided expert advice to benefit your salmon fishing experience.

First of all, the location for salmon fishing is vital. Of course we already know that some areas in Britain are a lot better than the rest, Scotland having the highest Salmon populated rivers and lakes and oceans. Its best to use a fishery that is persevering in the preservation of the Salmon population. These fisheries will usually have RSPCA approval and all the fish will be healthy on a sustainable diet, affirming they are happy fish.

The time of year can also have an impact on how successful you are fishing, with spring and autumn being more favoured times of the year. Furthermore the best times of the day are during phases of low light on cloudy days. Radiant and sunny weather will encourage the salmon to hide and assemble deep in the holes of the river. Of course if you can uncover one of these holes with a great amount of salmon inside you can fish there all day long!

Fishing with a friend is always advised as you can work as a team. Whilst one of you fishes the other can help detect salmon, or climb onto a riverbank and observe the reaction and behaviour of the fish, locating specifically where they are. Obviously when you have located the salmon stay still and silent, salmon can get frightened very easily and will escape, so always be patient. When you feel a tug reel it in.

Of course having the correct equipment always helps and it alters from region to region, angler to angler. Always make sure your rod is strong and sturdy, there is nothing as bad as letting a huge salmon escape simply because your equipment wasn't up to the job. Salmon fishing of course is always made substantially easier by using the right equipment, so always ask for advice from the fishery guides and ghillies, before you arrive.

Fly-fishing equipment and lines is a must, with a variety of flies and a range of bait. You will also require waders for the deep water found in most rivers if you want to reach the prime locations. Additionally a landing net is important as this will greatly reduce your chances of losing the salmon as bringing it to shore. Make sure finally that you have a permit to fish in that particular river or sea or you could face legal allegations.

Salmon are the most difficult of fish species to capture so its always best to practice your technique before you go to a salmon fishery. Of course using the right equipment and bait always helps and can assist with that important catch of the day.
