When it comes to search engine ranking, link popularity is crucial in determining a website's rank. Well, it’s basically about the number of incoming links a website has. Even though very few search engines reveal how many algorithms work, some major sites with a higher number of back links appear to rank higher in different search engines.

 

Nevertheless, there is more to receiving high ranks in the engines than just having more links as compared to other sites. For instance, the anchor text related with the incoming link is usually read by the search engines, which utilize it to establish what the target page is possibly about. If a website page has a lot of back-links with the anchor text 'cat food,' for instance, the engine's algorithm will most likely decide that the content of the site page is associated to cat food, so the page will have a higher rank for that term.

However, for as longs as you do not pursue linking from sites that seem questionable, then the more back-links you will get, the higher the ranking of your website anchor text will be.
