How to Catch Striped Bass

By Andrew Wilson

Striped bass is a popular catch for sport fishing enthusiasts, especially in the US. Those who do fishing for fun and for serious tournaments look forward to catching a big one. It’s often compared to largemouth bass, which is another favorite catch in tournaments all over the world. They both have big bellies, big mouths, and broad tails. They also are aggressive types. That’s why they present a good challenge to anglers every time. But unlike the largemouth, which lives only in freshwater bodies, the striper thrives in both freshwater and saltwater.

A hooked large or smallmouth bass typically jumps out of the water and makes attempts to spit the hook. Their fight is characterized by short bursts and these strong jumps. If you observe closely, it’s an entirely different scenario when you try to catch a striped bass. It will give its all in about two to three long runs, depending on its size, of course. You need to watch out as it is known to have the ability of crushing light hooks and wrapping anglers’ lines around boulders and other items underwater. Expect that it will give a good fight. In fact, it will give you a hard time not only in your boat, but even when you get them to the shore.

Another great thing about striped bass is that they are normally large. They are also generally unpredictable by nature that’s why fishing in the same spot for two consecutive days can yield different results. They cover a huge body of water that’s why you need to make the most of it if you happen to find a school. To put it simply, finding the perfect location means you will go home with wide smiles - and lots of striped bass at hand.

Striped bass fishing can be extremely exciting if you are familiar about their characteristics and apply the right techniques accordingly. Most of the time, they stay on clear water and they are easier to scare than largemouth bass. This means you should be very observant and cautious in your surroundings when you go fishing.

Checking the water temperature is equally important. Although striped bass are always available regardless of the season, they prefer certain areas in different times of the year. They favor deeper waters during summertime and they move to shallower locations during fall. On the other hand, winter means striped bass are likely found near the surface because they are looking for warmer waters.

Some of the most effective bait for striped bass fishing include anchovies, crankbait, plugs, sardines, shrimp, spoons, and streamer flies, among others. Naturally, fresh bait is a better choice if you want to have a fruitful fishing experience.

As far as equipment is concerned, it is vital to have a strong line. Remember that you are after a big fish and so weak lines can lead to disappointment. You have several rigs to choose from but it’s always safe to get a slider with a large sinker. The most ideal are those that have a 3-inch leader and a 9/0 hook.

Equipped with sufficient knowledge and the right tools, you’ll be ready to go striped bass fishing anytime, anywhere. Hunting for stripers can be really fun and it’s always a joy to catch one (or possibly more!) whether you are on your own or with your close friends and family members.

One additional tip is how to enjoy it: you can bring out your soy sauce and wasabi. Striped bass makes a good alternative for tuna, salmon, and all the other fish as a sushi ingredient. And if you don’t fancy raw fish, you can just sprinkle a bit of seasoning on your fresh catch and bake it for a few minutes.

Although striped bass are always available regardless of the season, they prefer certain areas in different seasons.
