How to Plan for a Backpacking Trip

By Andrew Wilson

Andrew Wilson

People who are not fans of traveling are curious as to how traveling enthusiasts, especially backpackers, survive going to places they are unfamiliar with. Obviously, going to a place where one doesn’t know anyone, the language, the customs, and the places is a challenge. However, because of their itchy feet, they rise up to the challenge. To be able to survive though, planning overseas travel is a necessity. Here is how to plan simply for a backpacking trip.

Look For an Experienced Partner

This is important for people who are going on a backpacking trip for the first time. There can be many possible risks along the way, and this can be daunting especially for neophyte backpackers. Having an experienced partner is bliss. Therefore, look for someone who has the same desire to travel, and at the same time, someone you are comfortable with. If you cannot find one, try joining backpacker clubs in your local area or online forums. These are great resources for backpackers.

Set the Destination and Fix your Schedule

Before packing the bags, it is important to decide where to go and how long that trip is going to be. This is an essential step to be able to keep all schedules properly arranged to avoid missing work, school, and some other commitments back home. If a backpacker is clueless as to the best possible destination considering one’s resources – time, funds, etc. – it is important to do some research first. Look for places that are fascinating, near enough if it is your first time, and a place you can afford. Your list might just grow as you get used to backpacking.

Know the Place Being Visited

The most common problem that most backpackers experience is getting lost. To be able to avoid this scenario, careful planning is needed. The first thing to do is to acquire a map of the destination; choose one that is easy for you to read. However, getting lost is normal and usually, this is when backpackers discover great places and views. So, research, but leave enough puzzles for you to unravel in the spirit of fun and adventure.

Protect Travel and Financial Documents

Backpackers need to remember to bring vital documents with them such as identification cards, ATM cards, passport, plane tickets, and even their birth certificate. Backpackers need to remember that no one knows them where they are going and that unexpected things can happen. This is the main reason why these documents must never be left behind. However, be sure to keep them safe while on the road.

Know the Rules

“Ignorance of the law excuses no one.” Thus, it is imperative that you learn enough of the dos and don’ts of the place before embarking on a backpacking travel. The country you are visiting can be very different from your own; so be very careful. Never be too confident or complacent to avoid complications.

Pack Light

Backpacking trip planning entails preparing a checklist of what to bring and pack to be able to travel light. In backpack traveling, one is going to be walking a lot. Hence, it is hard to carry strolling cases. As a matter of fact, backpackers need to find a way to bring at least only one backpack and a small pouch for the most important things such as money, camera and a mobile phone.

Know the Climate

To be able to pack light, backpackers need to know what kinds of clothes to bring. If backpackers plan on going to the beach or going to a tropical place, then spaghetti strapped tops, shorts, and swimwear must be bought. Of course, it is going to be weird for one to wear snow gear in a hot place.

These are some of the most important things that backpackers need to keep in mind when doing backpacking trip planning. Follow these few tips and avoid a lot of mishaps.
