Right Managed And Free Royalty Stock Photography Overview

In the past, when advertising agencies required photographic content for a marketing project, they would normally hire a professional photographer. However, this practice has been slowly replaced with stock images as more and more people became passionate about photography and discovered ways to earn money using online resources.

Stock photos are images that are licensed out for public or commercial purposes. Since very few photographers can afford the cost of selling their images around the world, they look for image banks and picture libraries where they can market their photos and where people can purchase the rights for their utilization.

Tip: When you are on a trip, snap photos of insignificant things. The images may seem unimportant when you take the photographs, but the images will serve as a memory of your trip in the future.

Generally, there are two types of stock photo licenses: right-managed images and free royalty stock images. Rights-managed stock photos (or RM photos) are a type of usage license in which the buyer pays for the use or license of a photo on a “pay per use” basis. More often than not, TM photos are used for one particular project only for a set period of time and only in certain geographical territory. The price of RM images is largely dependent on how the image is going to be used. For example, you can only pay about $150 for a license if it’s going to be showed in a local publication with limited circulation. The price of the same photo, however, can increase up to several thousands of dollars if it’s utilized for a nationwide ad campaign.

The stock photography industry began in the 1920s, with a company established by H. Armstrong Roberts. The popularity of right-managed images, however, slowly dropped during the middle part of the 1990s. Free royalty stock photography suddenly became the biggest thing that time. Free royalty stock photos simply means “free of royalties”, indicating that you don’t have to pay for each time you use an image.

Tip: Take a little time to focus on and appreciate your surroundings when photographing beautiful pictures in nature. Enjoy the beautiful scenery, but also make sure that you're cleaning up after yourself.

Before, businesses revolved around right-managed images and paid for a licensed photo for one specific use only. The sudden popularity of royalty stock photos, however, allowed many customers to purchase copyrights of an image and do whatever they like with it in perpetuity. Generally, royalty stock images are available under a non-exclusive, non-transferable, worldwide, multiple-use sub-license.

Unlike right-managed photos, free royalty images are non-exclusive. Meaning, no person has exclusive rights of the image and hence, can be used by others as well. If you require exclusive use of any stock photo, however, you must buy it under different license terms. Also, free royalty stock photos are non-transferable. This means that you cannot transfer the license to somebody else through resale, gifting, etc. Remember, only the photographer can sell the photo as many times as he or she prefers. Products of free royalty photography have no time limit when it comes to photo usage. This is contrary to RM photos, in which the images can be used for a limited time only. In addition, free royalty photos can be used anywhere in the world. Unlike RM images, which are applicable to certain places only.

Tip: Before going on a trip, make sure you carefully pack the equipment. Take all the lenses you need and don't forget to pack extra batteries and cleaning tools! Don't take 50 lenses when five will do, as this could bog you down when trying to carry your camera equipment from place to place.

More agencies and businesses prefer free royalty photography products than right-managed ones because they are more affordable. Budget-minded marketers and designers can very well benefit from such images especially if they don’t necessarily need exclusive photos. Free royalty pictures have the most lenient permissible utilization for both personal and business projects.

The most popular distributors of free royalty photography today are the microstock sites. Microstock sites are websites that specialize in free royalty photos and accept creations from amateurs and professionals alike. Some of the most common microstock sites are iStockPhoto, Shutterstock, and Dreamstime. If you are a photographer who has a large portfolio of stock images, it’s very possible for you to earn thousands of dollars a month from selling the license of your photos through these stock photography sites. Today, a lot of photographers earn more than $100,000 a year from the sale of free royalty stock photography alone.

Getting started with microstock sites is not really that difficult. In general, there are no registration fees required and most only require that you submit a certain number of photos that pass their quality control standards. Just make sure that the portfolios you submit are sharp, interesting, unique, and most importantly, marketable to get accepted.
