Knowhow-Now Article

I happen to be one of those people that could eat salsa and chips every night. Or maybe some onion dip on a tortilla chip, if my stomach insists otherwise. My clothes are a dead give away as to what I have been eating, and so is the table with splatters of salsa or dip everywhere. I haven’t thought much about those splatters until I was contacted by a company who developed a product that would help with those nasty splatters.

The name of the product is “CaliBowl”, designed by Jeff Bollengier, a California native and retired construction worker. Jeff had a dream that one day he would create a bowl that would put an end to the messy splatters that happen so often when eating dips or salsa. He developed the concept of making a simple adjustment to the rim which caused the food to “roll back” into the bowl, therefore ending the problems of splattering food.

I was so happy to try out the bowls when asked, as I was getting pretty tired of cleaning up my messes (and my husband's messes even more so), after eating salsa and chips.

I was pretty impressed by how heavy the bowl was and not something that would tip over easily. It’s made of polypropylene; a plastic that is very durable and even some recycled materials. I like the fact that it is ‘feels’ heavy, as I don’t think someone would be as likely to tip it over. I also liked the fact that the bowls came in so many festive colors which made eating salsa and chips even more fun, like I was in Mexico!

My husband, who was an engineer earlier in his career, loved putting water in the bowl and flipping it quickly upward -- the concave curve of the inside of the bowl flips the liquid back into the center of the bowl. The same effect would take a quickly scooped spoon of soup and guide it back onto the spoon. Anything that finds its way onto the lip is also directed back into the bowl by the top-side slope.

Since the bowls' plastic does not hold on to cling wrap well, I was concerned that the bowls did not come with covers. I like to put bowls with dip or salsa back in the refrigerator. The children’s bowls did come with covers and I have been told that the CaliBowl Company is working on making covers for the bowls in the near future. The CaliBowls also came in many different sizes, from small, medium to larger sized bowls giving the consumer a larger variety of different sized bowls. Being that the bowls are pretty heavy duty, I found them hard to store in my small kitchen. Someone with a larger kitchen probably wouldn’t have that problem at all.

I would recommend these bowls to people that like to entertain or just about anyone that likes to snack on chips and dips. The price of the bowls range from $15.15 for two bowls to approximately $30.00 for a set of four bowls.
