Southwestern Home Decor

People from very different backgrounds choose a Southwestern home decor to create a unique environment for themselves. The whole inclination for such a decorating style comes from people's attraction for a rich culture. Vibrant colors, versatile pottery with lots of terra cotta, Indian printed fabrics, earth toned candles etc., all define this home decorating style in general lines. I say 'general' because there is so much more to the Southwestern decorating trend than it can be expressed in these lines.

You can start with wall painting to set the Southwestern home decor. A brightly colored wall will work to highly accent a particular house area while the others are painted in a neutral shade. More color can come from knick knacks and throw pillows. For curtains, linen and beddings, you can use Indian printed fabric. The theme stands out a lot better if you strategically use details to liven up the existing decor elements. This is usually true when you have some existing neutral furniture that you want to integrate in the theme.

If you have custom-made furniture that matches the Southwestern home decor style, then, too many details could seem superfluous. That's the risk of over-doing with decorations. The choice of furniture seems to give the most trouble of all, for Southwestern home decor trends. While with textiles, the American-Indian motif is enough, with the real furniture pieces you have to pay greater attention. Southwestern furniture should look rural or old, even if you have it made brand new. The aesthetic impression is everything here, and you have to work on it well.

The walls and shelves deserve great care and attention during the decorating process. Instead of artwork, you can hung an Indian blanket on the wall. Potted cacti and small earth figures will compliment such elements and find an excellent place on your shelves. In fact, earth pots and bright colors make a great house extension outdoors. Use them in the garden too, for a full dimension of the Southwestern design project.

Wrought iron represents another specificity of the Western home decor style. Candle holders for table tops and striking wall sconces, coffee tables, end tables, and fireplace grates can be made of wrought iron. And the great part is that they can be as rustic, simple or elegant as you like. It is up for the house owner to express individuality in the atmosphere of the house. Beyond the decorating style, there will be something more to perceive in the environment: your specific presence.
