Knowhow-Now Article

For a large part of the late 20th century, the cardigan was shunned by fashion-conscious men and women, who considered it out of date and old-fashioned. But in the last 10 years, that attitude has changed considerably. A 21st century cardigan revival amongst fashion designers has meant that the garment is now a staple wardrobe item for people of both genders at any age, but especially with young women. Most women now simply throw on a cardigan over jeans and a t-shirt or a casual dress. However, this look can get a little dull. If you're looking for ways to wear a cardigan and keep it looking fresh, read on for some handy style tips.

One of the most interesting ways to wear a cardigan is to belt it round the middle. This works best if you pair a long cardigan – ideally one with a hemline down to the mid-thigh – with a matching belt. So if you've got a chunky long cardigan, match with a wide or thick leather belt. Alternatively, if your cardigan is thin and delicate, a skinny belt will work best. By playing around with contrasting colours, you'll also be able to create an outfit that makes you stand out from the crowd. For instance, pair a yellow cardigan with a green belt, or a black cardigan with a brown belt. In general, a belted cardigan looks best with a pair of jeans, corduroys or flared trousers, and – along with wedged heels and a long, flowing hairdo – will help you sport the 1970s fashion trend that's crowded catwalks all through 2011.

Another way to spice up an old cardigan is to create embellishments yourself. An easy way to do this is to buy a selection of vintage brooches and simply pin them on. Instantly, this can transform a homely cardigan into glam, retro-inspired knitwear. Alternatively, if you're a keen seamstress or you want to add your own twist to your cardigan, sew on some new features instead. A ruffled edge in a contrasting colour – try orange against blue or cream against dark green – can be quickly attached with a sewing machine, by hand-stitching or even with an iron-on hemming strip. You could also make a large flower or badge out of fabric and sew it on yourself for a more permanent embellishment than a brooch.

Tired of finding the same old buttons on cardigans? You could try picking them off and sewing on new buttons instead. For instance, taking black buttons off a black cardigan and replacing them with gold ones instead will turn a tired cardigan into an instant going-out classic. You could also get rid of the buttons altogether, and replace them with a travelling ribbon fastening, some toggles or very small badges for a more quirky addition. Whatever you decide to do, it's important to pair women's cardigans with different combinations to see what suits your fashion personality best.
