A few Simple Tips For Getting More From Your Garden

Millions of people have at least a little garden in the yard. I've had my own personal small garden for many years. When I started my vegetable garden, my initial crop did not total more than half a bucket full. With the help of my grandaddy, since then, I've been able to grow more than enough vegetables and fruit to feed my entire family. It needed a lot of time and effort to help make the garden function so I thought I must share with you what I have learned so you won't need to go through what I went through.

Among the first tasks you must do when you are planning your garden is to make sure you choose a spot that gets at least 8 to 10 hours of direct sunlight everyday. The lack of adequate sunlight in your garden can present you with poor results. Guaranteeing you have enough sunlight is the cornerstone to a great garden.

Once you determined your spot, you want to till the soil with manure and seaweed. You don't need oceanic seaweed, even those found in lakes, ponds and rivers will do. By tilling these things into the soil you will be adding much needed nutritional value your crops will need to flourish. Besides manure and seaweed, you can even use compost that you've made or purchased.

When you are watering your garden, you simply must be careful. Unless you give enough or give too much, you won't yield enough crops as you should. As a general baseline, make positive that your plants end up getting about 1 to 2 inches of water each week. This helps these plants build strong and deep roots. If you must water your garden because of lack of rain, you should water your plants before 10:00am. You should not water in the afternoon since the leaves could burn from the sweltering sun. If you undertake it during the night, there may be risk of fungal growth since the water does not evaporate.

When you have pesky insects that are feeding on your plants, there are some things you can easily do that don't require dangerous chemicals. The first thing we suggest is to grow lavender, basil and peppermint all around your garden. These plants are effective at helping to keep many types of insects at bay from your plants, plus deer and rabbits dislike them as well. Here is a good technique to keep those pesky bugs away from your garden. Mix together 1 to 2 tablespoons of essence of garlic and 2 tablespoon of dish lotion with 1 cup of vegetable oil. Once mixed add about 2 tablespoons of the mixture to a pump bottle and then load up the bottle with water. Once per week, spray this mixture on top of every one of your plants.
