Knowhow-Now Article

One positive aspect of the cold autumn weather is that you can layer-up with cosy jumpers, hats, scarves and warm jackets. There are a range of jacket styles, each with a slightly different look and function. The top three jacket styles for autumn are trench coats, biker jackets and hooded duffle coats.

The trench coat is a classic style that remains popular year in, year out. The defining features of most trench coats are the buttons extending across a single or double breast and the prominent shoulder straps. Trench coats are usually knee-length with a belted waist, although it is possible to get trench coats in other lengths and without a belt too.

The Trench coat dates back to World War I, when it was worn by soldiers in the trenches (hence the name). Nowadays, however, they are popular women's jackets that work well as raincoats and as part of a casual yet sophisticated look.

The biker jacket is typically made of leather and gets its name from its popularity among motorcyclists, who traditionally prefer this style because it is warm without being bulky and the thick fabric offers protection in accidents. However, the biker jacket has crossed over to mainstream fashion, becoming one of the most sought-after jacket styles from season to season. Biker jackets are waist-length and often feature angled zippers, buckles and belts.

Finally, the duffle coat rounds off the list of the top three jacket styles for autumn. Often made of wool, the duffle coat looks similar to a pea coat, but is fastened by rope and toggle-style buttons. Duffle coats usually have a hood and although they tend to be more of a coat than a jacket, can either be waist-length or cut off mid- thigh. The cosy, warm wool of the duffle coat makes it slightly more suited to the cold weather than the biker jacket or trench coat. It is clear to see that the top three jackets for autumn all have a slightly different personality and function.

Women's jackets come in various styles, so when you’re choosing your next jacket or coat, it can be useful to think of what look you're trying to create – French chic with a trench, rocker with a biker or traditional with a duffel - and it's important to bear in mind the practical function you wish the jacket to serve. All being well though, there should be something that suits most tastes this autumn.
