| Title | Top Events In Newcastle In 2012 |
Newcastle is one of the UK's most exciting cities, and it rivals centres like London, Manchester and Glasgow in its breadth of cultural activities. However, many people overlook this great city when considering city break destinations in the UK. Yet in 2012, Newcastle is teeming with world-class attractions and festivities, so it's a great year to visit this iconic northern city if you've never been before.
If you're a theatre fan, then February is the time to visit Newcastle, as it's during this month that the city's famous Theatre Royal celebrates its 175th birthday. On Sunday 19th February 2012, the theatre's 175th Birthday Gala will feature a host of exciting performances, including ones from Matthew Bourne's New Adventures, pantomime legend Christopher Biggins, Scottish comedy duo The Krankies and the young stars of Billy Elliott.
Alternatively, art enthusiasts will be attracted by one of the excellent exhibitions hosted by the BALTIC art gallery in Gateshead, just across the River Tyne from the city of Newcastle. Between February and May, the BALTIC will exhibit the works of Andrea Zittel, a lauded American sculptor who is most well known for her 'Wagon Stations'. Her work is seldom seen in the UK and looks likely to be a big draw for visitors to Newcastle/Gateshead in 2012.
Newcastle will also host a range of great music festivals this year. One of the city's most popular festivals is Evolution, which has been described in the past as "the UK's model city festival". Taking place during the first weekend in June on the banks of the River Tyne, revellers are attracted as much by the festival's iconic city setting as the calibre of its artists. Last year, acts performing included Iggy and the Stooges, Katy B, Plan B and Tinie Tempah, and this year's festival looks set to emulate the same high standard.
Sports fans in search of a memorable city break may also be pleased to note that Newcastle will host some of this summer's Olympic football matches. Although the Olympic and Paralympic Games will be held in London in 2012, many of the UK's cities will share the action and Newcastle's famous St James Park football stadium (now known as the 'Sports Direct Arena') will host nine football matches for the games. Even if you don't have a ticket to one of these matches, the city will be a great place to visit when they're on, with an unforgettable sporting atmosphere. But it's also very likely to be busy, so if you don't book your accommodation in advance, you may have to settle for a hotel near Newcastle rather than right in the city centre.
