Rhythm And Blues Music - A Piece Of History In Music
Every music genre has its own story to tell. One of the most popular genres of today is R&B, also known as rhythm and blues music, which originated in the 40's.
A general assumption about rhythm and blues music is that it has the style and the appeal of black pop music. There has never been a clear definition of rhythm and blues music and black pop music is the closest that it can get during that time. However, as time goes on and black pop music changes, the term R&B is often associated with almost anything that has got to do with black musical style.
The birth of rhythm and blues music that bands usually play are tunes that were derived from swing jazz with vocals that reflect the blues. The big band jump blues of the 40's is like a semi-version of rhythm and blues music that usually features a front singer, horn-driven orchestra, and less guitar music. Jump bands usually started out in small groups that are similar to swing bands. These bands generally play boogie-driven beats and bass that have rhythm-accented backbeats. Solo saxophone players, who leave their jazz roots, were the usual features of most of these groups.
In the 50's and onward, rhythm and blues was a term that's synonymous to blues records. The early 50's also gave way to the development and merging of rhythm and blues to gospel, soul, and electric blues music. R&B also became a part of early rock and roll.
In the 70's, rhythm and blues paved the way for funk, soul, disco and other distinctive African American music styles. In the 80's, the updated style of rhythm and blues emerged, and it is now known as contemporary R&B.
By the 1970s, 'rhythm and blues' became a general term for soul and funk music. In the 1980s, a new style of 'rhythm and blues' was developed and it is now known as contemporary R&B.
If you look back at the history of rhythm and blues music, there were genres and sub-genres that were developed, but still have the characteristic features of the main genre. And not everyone had the idea that rock and roll and R&B were linked in the early days.
