Prostate gland is one of the exocrine glands that is responsible for the maintenance and health of the reproductive system of males. This is a muscular organ with a size that of a walnut, which is located below the bladder and in front of the rectum in males.
The function of the prostate glands depends on the male hormonal levels and production like testosterone. Prostate gland begins growing in puberty and keeps increasing throughout life, though its growth rate decreases down after twenty-five years. The following are the main functions of prostate glands.
1. Mobility and survival of the sperm. This function of the prostate gland is considered necessary in the overall functioning of male reproductive system. The prostate gland produces sperm primarily in the testicles with its secretion of enzymes calcium, and citric acid. The fluid secretion is additional to semen before the process of ejaculation. It also has Prostate Specific Antigen or PSA, an enzyme which aids in dissolving the semen after the ejaculation. The content of the fluid has alkaline based semen that protects the sperm cells from the antagonistic acidic vaginal environment during sexual intercourse. Also, it nurtures the sperms and its mobility all through out, which is a good element in men's fertility.
2. Controls urine flow during the ejaculatory process. This controls the urine flow during ejaculation. The complex system of seminal valves in prostate sends the semen in the urethra during the ejaculatory process and the sphincter (a prostate muscle seals the bladder), thus preventing urine access in the urethra.
3. Propels semen fluid. Another function of prostate gland is propelling semen fluid out the penis, during orgasm. The muscles of the prostate gland helps in the expulsion of semen fluids.
Males whose ages are 50 years and older are more prone of having a swelling of the prostate and other prostate gland problems. Prostate cancer is considered to be among common kinds of disease that afflict men. So, one should be aware about the prostate health. Since the important functions of prostate gland and its responsibility inĀ the reproductive system of men have been discussed, then the next step would be to visit a medical practitioner and have it checked to avoid any medical complications in the future.
