Knowhow-Now Article

The life of a car depends on various factors, such as the maintenance they receive and the use they experience. If you take care to replace auto parts each time a piece presents evident wear, then the lifetime of your car will be extended. Because of this, it is not abnormal to see models on the road that are already more than ten years old.

Age vs. Maintenance

Some years ago we did not even bother to ask what the lifetime of a car was since we usually traded it in after about five years for a newer model with better features. In fact, in the popular imagination, the idea even subsists that if a car is ten years old and has more than 200,000 kilometres, it should necessarily be traded for a new one.

In Europe, 46.48% of drivers change their car when it is between five and ten years old; only 18.55% substitute it when it is more than ten years old. However, if the body and mechanical components of the vehicle are well maintained, is it not necessary to replace the car with a new model. If you only use the car to move within the city and you avoid long journeys and rough roads, a car that is more than ten years old is a viable option.

How Can the Life of the Car Be Increased?

There are some ways to increase the useful life of a car. The first step is to respect the maintenance program indicated by the manufacturer in order to prevent serious breakdowns. However, you should always be aware of the state of the parts most prone to wear, such as the brake pads, the air and oil filters, the spark plugs, the tires, the battery, and the voltage regulator.

Remember that the engine merits special attention. Beyond periodic checks stipulated by the maintenance program, it is recommended that you check the oil and refrigerant levels regularly. Likewise, you should be attentive to any strange sounds that may indicate possible problems.

Another aspect that is usually neglected, but which is fundamental to increasing the life of a car, is the body. You should make sure that the vehicle is protected from elements like the sun, rain, and salt, especially in areas close to the sea, since these factors can lead to premature damage. For this, it is enough to park the car in a properly covered garage each night.

Finally, remember that when you need to replace parts, the best option is to opt for original auto parts since these will ensure better vehicle performance; they are more durable and will guarantee your safety on the road.
