What To Expect If You're Getting Into Therapy When You Have Depression

Group therapy is another type of therapy you may have some success with. This kind of therapy has you with a group of others that have problems that are similar to yours. This can be helpful but at first you may be a little shy. That's okay, you can just sit and listen for the first few sessions if you would like. Everyone in the group has to keep whatever is said in the group a secret, and you don't have to tell anyone your name if you don't wish to. You also don't have to answer any questions that you feel uncomfortable with.

You will probably want to test your therapist out for a few sessions to see if they are right for you. Some people feel more comfortable with male or female therapists. Sometimes, you may just not like the attitude of the person. It's alright to complain about your therapist and get a new one. Know that not everyone is going to match up to your expectations. Just remember that it could take some time to find one you like, so don't give up too easily thinking nobody is right for you!

Tip: Reach out for support from friends and family if you suffer from depression. Finding others who have dealt with depression, and who are able to pass on their tips for coping, will be very helpful to you.

A therapist is not going to be able to prescribe you any medication for your depression. However, you can give your psychiatrist permission to speak with your therapist so they can come up with a medication plan together. Make sure that when you are on medication, you take notes on how you feel so that you can share this information with your therapist. Call your doctor, psychiatrist, or any health professional immediately if you notice that your depression is getting worse or you have thoughts of harming yourself or others.

Getting into therapy is something that has helped quite a few people.
