Cracking What Is ADHD

If your attention has been called by the school because of your kid’s hyperactivity, you may be surprised. Quite too often, parents of children with ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder do not know that their kids’ hyperactivity and short attention span can mean having this condition. The mere hint that your child can be suffering from this disorder can be unnerving. Obviously you want to understand more about what is ADHD.

What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is actually a common condition affecting children and teens; for some it may persist into adulthood. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), it can afflict 3 to 5 percent of children. Experts are apt to believe that it can occur to about 8 to 10 percent of the children in school.

ADHD is a neurobehavioral development disorder that is called by other names: attention deficit, hyperkinetic disorder, and hyperactivity. These names are suggestive of the more observable signs and symptoms such as difficulty to focus, more reckless and impatient. Kids suffering from this condition have less control over their focus so that they are easily distracted. They also have poor control over their speech and physical activity which are outwardly manifested and noticed. These behaviors interfere with a child's ability to function at school and at home as well as relate with others in a social milieu.

What symptoms do people with ADHD manifest?

The symptoms of this disorder can be grouped into three categories: hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsiveness.

Hyperactivity is generally manifested with the inability to stay still for a time. They struggle when placed in classrooms where they are expected to sit down quietly. They are seen squirming, fidgeting, tinkering with their bags and talking to their classmates inside the classroom. They run about the entire house, check out every cranny nook and corner, and play with everything kept in drawers and boxes. They talk incessantly and keep asking questions.

Inattention is evident with their lack of focus on what they are doing. They do not listen and can’t follow directions which lead to mistakes, unfinished tasks and disorganized rooms, bags, and drawers. They do not pay attention to details which is why they are forgetful and easily lose things. They have a great tendency to get lost in the middle of class work or meeting as their attention flutter to the dreamland. They hate sitting down for long hours.

Impulsiveness in a person with ADHD is seen with their impatience. They hate queuing in long lines and waiting for their turn. They mess and interrupt people who are busy and they blurt answers to the teacher’s query even before the question is finished.

With this behavior, is it as easy for them to blend in a crowd or class without getting noticed? They may even be popular in the school for being summoned in the principal’s office far too often for “misbehaving.”

How does ADHD affect adults?

ADHD is supposed to be more prevalent among young kids and teens; this is outgrown with their developmental processes in the succeeding years. Through time, there are a number of kids with ADHD that may develop an increased control over physical activity, speech and focus and do not appear to have worse symptoms. However, there are many cases when the disorder persists to adulthood particularly when one is never diagnosed and no psychological interventions have been made.

Adults with ADHD may also be complicated with other behavioral issues that make it harder to diagnose. These symptoms include: poor organization skills, low self-esteem, and difficulty focusing on a task, as well as chronic tardiness, forgetfulness and boredom. They usually have anger management issues, low tolerance for frustration and problems, mood swings and anxiety or depression problems. Thus, adults with ADHD often struggle with work and relationship that drive them to substance abuse or chronic depression.

ADHD affect a significant number of kids. It is important for parents to understand what is ADHD all about to be able to provide the necessary medical and psychological treatment. You would not want your kid to be part of the statistics of adults with ADHD who continue their struggles without knowing what’s wrong with them.
