One free green choice you can make is to recycle. Many items you use on a daily basis are recyclable. Paper is something that you may use a lot of and it is one that is easy to recycle. Do you read the paper, get junk mail or spend time enjoying magazines? Any paper you use can be recycled. Thicker paper and cardboard is recyclable, too. Most packaging that is thick paper can be recycled, as can cardboard boxes. Do you use plastic? If you buy any products, chances are some of them are in recyclable plastic containers. Each plastic container or product that you can recycle has an arrow on it that indicates it is able to be recycled; it usually has a number on it, too. Glass is another material that you can recycle and so is metal. Metals are particularly great to recycle as you can get paid for them. Anything from cans to old bicycles or other metal products can be recycled and offer you a little payout.

Tip: Instead of blasting the air conditioner to keep cool in summer, wear clothes made from naturally cooling fabrics. Cotton and similar fabrics will draw moisture from your skin, so you will stay cool.

Along with recycling these common items, it is also important to recycle your old electronics. Instead of tossing them, you can bring them to your local recycling center. Another option is to bring them to an electronic store that offers a recycling program. Most of the big chain electronic stores have this option. They also take batteries, old cords and cell phones.

Another green change you can make is to switch out traditional light bulbs for CFL bulbs. While the CFL bulbs are more expensive, they will last a lot longer which makes them cheaper in the long run. Not only that, they use a lot less energy. These bulbs cost more than traditional bulbs, but you can switch them out a few at a time to save money.

Tip: Make sure solar panels are facing the sun. For instance, the optimum angle for the Northern Hemisphere results in panels facing south at 15 degrees greater than the latitude at which they are installed.

You can also hang your laundry outside to be more green and to save money. When the weather is nice, hang your clothes on a drying line outside. This saves precious energy and helps the Earth, as well as your pocket book. While you may not always have this option, anytime you can use nature's heat to dry your clothes are you helping out the planet.
