A lot of people agree that a mother’s worries and pain can all go away once she sees a simple smile on her kid’s face. The challenges in raising a kid are enormous, but it gets easier with the right knowledge, passion and commitment. The challenges in raising especial children is especially harder and heart rending including those mothers who are trying to raise kids with ADHD.
What is ADHD and what are the tips on how to raise kids with ADHD?
ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is common to people both young and old. Most experts believe that children can outgrow ADHD; with the right help, treatment and therapy they may be able to control the tendencies of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Children suffering from such condition may have a hard time paying attention and concentrating. They also have a hard time following directions, finishing tasks and controlling extra movements. Though these symptoms seem normal among certain kids, these happen in excess to kids with ADHD. Hence, parents really need to find time to give attention to their kid who has the special need so that troubles may not occur in school.
• The first thing that parents need to do is to find out whether their child is really experiencing such condition. Once they have confirmed it with the help of medical experts, they need to look at the problems that their child is facing and immediately try to find solutions.
• One of the most common problems that these kids are facing is troubles in school. These troubles may be towards other kids and towards their performance in school. Either way, there are solutions. For the first type of problem mentioned, perhaps parents can find a special school that caters to the needs of these special children. These schools entertain or teach these kids differently; just exactly how they should be treated. That may be a better environment both for problems in academics and with other kids.
• Parents can also make use of their creative ideas. Kids suffering from ADHD get distracted very easily, thus making them forget things such as homework, chores and stuff like that matter. Try to make colorful bulletin boards that attract the kids and put it in walls that they see every day. Through doing that, they are reminded of the duties they have to do.
• Another thing that parents can do to help their kid overcome their condition is to praise them whenever they do well in school or even when they complete their chores at home. Make the kids feel special and appreciated. However, that doesn’t mean that you must not scold or criticize them; it just means that parents need to praise their child struggling with ADHD more.
• As much as possible, raise your child using positive words. Do not over-burden the child with instructions. Be sensitive and give directions one at a time. Also, it is better if help is solicited from family, friends, the people from school and other support groups.
The last thing that parents need to teach or practice is to have fun once in awhile be stress-free. Timeout is needed from school and work. Try going out as a whole family because this can give a positive effect to the kids with ADHD. Through it all, parents need to think of themselves. Obviously, they cannot take care of their kid with special needs if they are emotionally saddled too. Staying healthy, physically, mentally and emotionally is important; staying stress-free is mandatory.
