Self-injurious Skin Picking – How to Stop It

When one has finds out he/she has a skin picking disorder the next step is finding solutions to delay or stop is progression. A self-injurious skin picking disorder is a habit of recurrent picking, biting or even scratching of the skin. This can result to skin damage including wounds, bleeding, infection or permanent scarring. According to some clinical experts, this condition is also called neurotic excoriation or self-inflicted dermatosis. The habit of skin picking is a repetitive behavior that extent beyond normal picking and this behavior commonly involves picking pimples, scalp, nails, lips, and other skin irregularities.


There are many reasons why skin picking is acquired. However, if this kind of habitual behavior is prolonged, it can cause severe damage on the skin as mentioned above. For those people who are suffering from self-injurious skin picking, there are solutions on how to stop the self picking habit.

Ways Of Stopping Your Skin Picking Habit

Most skin picking individuals are unaware that they are picking. To stop the habit, try to observe the behavior on what particularly started the picking, the duration, the frequency and areas that are commonly picked. After observing here are some tips to stop the progression of the habit:

  • Make Self Busy – One of the major causes of self-injurious picking of the skin are people who are bored and having nothing to do. According to some studies, 50-60 percent of people who have this problem may result to a skin picking habit. Try to get into busy activities or social interaction that can lead to diverting the urge of self-injurious skin picking to positive outlets.
  • If the previous solution does not work, try to talk to someone or open-it up with family or closed friends and colleagues. This is helpful since some individuals who are into self-injurious picking are one’s who are secretive with their problems. By doing so, it is important to let others know about the problem for them to help. Remember one cannot be helped if one does not want to help himself/herself. The role of significant others can assist you by letting you become aware of your actions especially when you are unknowingly picking.
  • In addition, there are toys that are designed to divert the attention of picking the skin stopping further skin damage. A stress ball is one of the toys that can help people channel their picking habits.

  • Manage stress and anxiety – Basically, self-injurious picking individuals begin picking when they are caught-up with stress and anxiety. Find ways on how to manage stress, anxiety or any change of moods that can trigger the skin picking. Exercise is one of the examples that can manage the stress, anxiety and other moods to prevent triggering the said self-injurious skin picking.
  • Medications – One of the pharmaceutical approaches is by taking anti-depressants. Although, skin picking disorder does not have its own medication but an antidepressant can assist by increasing the serotonin levels in the brain to improve the mood and prevent the urge to pick. Keep in mind that before administering antidepressants it is important to consult a certified physician about the situation.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy – If you are serious in stopping this kind of condition, try to undergo cognitive behavioral therapy. It is a therapy that covers solving and stopping the urge of skin picking with the help of medical intervention and management overseen by a certified and expert therapist.
