Knowhow-Now Article

Located deep within the Ozark Mountains, the idyllic town of Branson, Missouri has long been a popular vacation destination. In particular, Branson’s unique cold water lake, Lake Taneycomo, serves as a perfect spot for avid fisherman looking to take advantage of some of the best trout fishing in the United States and also families desiring a fun-filled lake vacation.

History of Lake Taneycomo

Lake Taneycomo was formed off of the White River when the Empire District Electric Company built the Powersite Dam in 1913. Originally a warm water lake, Taneycomo and its nearby communities quickly became popular tourist destinations. When the Table Rock Dam was completed in 1958, the tailwater of the newly created Table Rock Lake began to feed Lake Taneycomo instead of the White River, turning it into a cold water lake of over 2,080 surface acres. This unique situation also gives Taneycomo the characteristics of both a river and a lake, with the lake’s deepest depths sinking to over 50 feet. While the water typically gets warmer as the lake gets deeper, this can quickly change when the Table Rock Dam begins generating power, causing deep, cold water to run as swiftly as a fast-moving river.

Fishing for Trout

Following the completion of Table Rock Dam, the shift from warm to cold water, and the river-like conditions created by the dam’s generators, Lake Taneycomo became an ideal cold water fishery. The Missouri Department of Conservation wisely took advantage of this situation by building the Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery, which produces around 1,125,000 Rainbow and Brown Trout per year and helps provide Lake Taneycomo with a year-round fishing experience that’s tough to beat. Taneycomo suits every type of trout fisherman; the upper three miles of the lake are ideal for wading and fly fishing, while the lower twenty or so miles are more suitable for bait fishing from a boat or dock. The Trophy Trout/Artificial Area, which consists of the upper three miles, is heavily regulated and requires all fisherman to have their trout permits whether they plan on keeping the fish or not. Fisherman looking to get the most out of their experience should plan on checking out one of many Lake Taneycomo fishing reports before making their trip.

Additional Activities

Those not looking to take advantage of Lake Taneycomo’s world class trout fishing need not fret, as there are plenty of other activities to do on and around the lake. Other activities include swimming, boating, lake excursions, hiking, hunting, water skiing, bird watching, and more. Another easily accessible option is the Branson Landing Boardwalk, a scenic 1.5-mile lighted boardwalk along the Lake Taneycomo waterfront. Visitors to Branson Landing will find many great dining and entertainment options, including many free concerts, performances, and parties throughout the year. The Silver Dollar City theme park is also a great option for families looking for kid-friendly options, offering crafts, family attractions, thrill rides, and festivals to its patrons.
