Knowhow-Now Article

How many times do you hear children complaining when they have to learn tables – Why do I have to learn them?

This is the situation for many parents who are then at a loss to know how to answer it and encourage their children to want to learn the times tables.

A reply that tries to motivate children to learn tables can be expected along these lines;

1) There are very important for learning maths.

2) To get a good job when you leave school you need to learn tables.

3) When you are all grown up, the more you know, the better chance you will have of doing what you want to do.

4) The school wants you to learn tables so you'll understand maths.

These are just the sort of thing my parents said and possibly what you might say to your children to motivate them.

Teachers may well give examples from everyday life such as things to do with money or linking other benefits;

1) If you learn times tables you will know how much a number of things cost when you know the cost of one.

2) Maths at school will not be as hard if you learn tables well.

All these points are made to children so that they learn tables and all rely on convincing them using logic.

In work, business or a community situation in order to be persuasive we need to apply logic and at the same time also use emotion.

Emotional appeal can make a huge difference in persuasive speaking.

With adults using both logic and emotion increases your chances of being persuasive.

Do you think that it is the same for children? Logic and emotional appeal?

In fact with many children when the focus of persuasion is emotion this is far more effective than logic. Use emotion and not logic when you want to persuade your children to learn tables.

Here is the answer, to persuade your children to want to learn tables well explain that they are going to learn them by having a lot of fun, that it will be quick, and there will be a lot of play.

Appealing to your children's emotions by having a lot of fun and making them happy when learning tables will greatly increase their motivation to learn tables.

A fun technique used to learn times tables that does appeal to the emotions uses movement, pictures and colour.

The key to persuade your children to learn tables is to use lots of fun activities and not logic.
