Do you know how to control pests? You can learn more about handling it all yourself with advice from this article. You'll see there are many things that you can do to help alleviate pests.

If you are trying to get rid of pests in your home, you should think carefully if you have children and/or pets. Many of the chemicals that are in pesticides can be harmful to them. Get them out of the house for a few hours if you have no other choice.

Do not let people into your home that you know have a pest problem. Fleas, bed bugs, cockroaches and many other pests can be carried from home to home. If you know for a fact that someone has a pest problem do your best to keep them out of your home.

Bedbugs are a pain to rid your home of, as they are proficient at hiding. Before you attempt extermination, close off any holes. Thus, you can prevent bugs from escaping after your efforts are concluded.

Tip: Make sure you seal off any cracks and crevices around your home. These are one of the most common entry points for bugs into a home.

You don't need fancy sealants to keep mice out of your home. Stuff any hole or crack which is 0.25" or larger with poison, and then fill up the space with steel wool to ensure nothing will go back inside. Use a long screwdriver to really stuff the hole good and full.

If you want to reduce the amount of spiders in your home, make sure that you clean the clutter around your house such as piles of books or newspapers. Spiders are attracted to these things and may make webs around them so the best thing you can do is eliminate them in the first place.

If you are dealing with a stink bug invasion, try minimizing your use of outdoor lights. These pests are drawn to the brightness, so they will move closer to your house when the lights are on, giving them more opportunity to find their way in. Also, draw your blinds in the evening so the light from inside your home does not attract them.

Rat traps are the best way to get rid of rats and other rodents. Get rid of your garbage and clean your home as best as you can so the rats do not find food scraps. When you find droppings, place the trap there.

Tip: If you have a problem with bees, you'll need to have an experienced contractor deal with them. It can be hard to identify Africanized colonies and it is best not to take any risks since these aggressive bees could kill you.

An easy way to control pests around your home is to always put food in air tight containers. Bugs are attracted all kinds of human food. When you reduce the access to this food by placing in air tight containers, you will reduce the chances of having a pest control problem.

Baking soda and powdered sugar will keep cockroaches away. If you want to protect some areas form these bugs, mix some baking soda and sugar and sprinkle this mixture. Boric acid is also an efficient way to repel cockroaches, but you should not use boric acid if you have pets.

If you would like to figure out if you have termites, have a dog with training sniff for them, instead of just a human. Qualified humans are only able to tell you if one-third of the house is termite-free. A well-trained, termite sniffing dog can find all of them. Dogs cannot be beat. These dogs sniff out methane gas, which directly comes from termites eating your wood.

Fleas are a notoriously hard problem to solve. You can do a number of things to battle this problem, however. Investing in a quality flea spray can be an effective tool, as can vacuuming every day. When you have finished vacuuming, put your vacuum cleaner bag inside a plastic bag, seal it and put it in the hot sun. After it's been in the sun for a day, throw it away.

Tip: If you can minimize the clutter, you'll minimize the insects. There are numerous objects within our homes that can be used as a catch-all, and pests like to hide in the clutter on these objects.

Be sure your recycled goods are properly rinsed. It is especially important that soda cans, which house sugar residue, get rinsed well. Be certain to rinse soda bottles before placing them in your recycling bin.

Mosquito infestations in your yard can be highly problematic, especially in the late summer. To prevent mosquitoes from infesting your yard and using it for breeding, make sure you don't have any stagnant pools of water in your yard. Change the water in bird baths every week and avoid water build up in sand boxes and other containers.

Rat traps are a very effective way for dealing with rats in your home. Having said this, you should ensure that you clean your garbage, put your food into sealed containers, pick up clutter, etc. so that the rats don't have anything else to munch on. Place the mouse traps where you see the evidence of rats.

Are ants infesting your house? Combat it with a mixture of borax and sugar. They will be attracted to the sugar, but the borax will be deadly. Mix equal parts sugar and borax in a small, lidded jar. Put some holes in the top of the lid to make it easy to sprinkle.

Tip: Directions on pesticides must be followed completely. If you use them incorrectly, you may not get your desired results.

If you are living in a multi-unit building, any form of individual pest control measures that you take will be ineffective. This is because those pests can travel from one apartment unit to another. To get rid of the bugs completely, your whole building needs to be treated at one time.

If you live in an apartment and can't seem to get your pest problem under control, talk to the building manager. It may be that someone living next to you is the cause of the problem. If that is the case, you will continue seeing pests no matter what you do. Alert the owners or management so that they can perform a full inspection.

Cockroaches are very hard to kill and often come back into your home, even if you have killed off most of them. You can quickly get rid of most roaches with this simple trick! Take a jar and fill half of it with coffee grounds, and the other half with water. Roaches will be attracted to the coffee grounds, climb into the jar and drown.

A pesticide is a great way to control pests, but make sure it is safe to use. Some products may inform you that you shouldn't use them whenever the weather is too windy or too cold. Safety must always come first!

Use the advice you have learned here to formulate your own effective pest control plan today. Pests can be annoying, and they are something you wish to rid yourself of. Now, you are better equipped to get rid of them. Keep these tips in mind and get rid of pests now.
