Sailing Through Pregnancy's Morning Sickness

Morning sickness can happen early in pregnancy, and often it will ease up as the months go by. For some women, however, morning sickness hits with a vengeance - early and often. This article has some helpful tips and kind words, to help make morning sickness just a distant memory.

Tip: Get your nipples ready for breastfeeding. Soften your chest area with lanolin cream to reduce the irritation.

Morning sickness usually lasts for the first trimester, or the first three months. It is typically a couple of hours each day, and does come first thing in the morning. Most women will see morning sickness go away, just as they are starting to put on a few pounds and show.

Tip: Make sure to protect your skin from the sun while pregnant. You should also stay away from tanning beds.

A great time-tested way to make the symptoms of morning sickness more bearable is to eat. In fact, if the mother-to-be eats smaller meals more often, this is known to be quite helpful. Also, eating something small yet filling, for example saltine crackers or cheese, is another tried and true antidote. This is also good for the baby, because both mom and baby will be getting enough to eat this way.

Tip: Heartburn is extremely common among pregnant women. Pregnancy hormones, especially progesterone, flood the body and lead to heartburn.

Ginger is often used for nausea, and it can be helpful for morning sickness. Boil a little piece for tea, and add honey for a tasty treat. Ginger can also be cooked with a casserole or stew, or shaved to top a salad. It is a plant, so it is unlikely to be unhealthy [especially when compared to a prescription solution].

Tip: Eat and drink properly to eliminate stretch marks during pregnancy. One of the most important things you can do is to consume lots of essential fatty acids on a daily basis.

It is very important for the pregnant woman to drink plenty of fluids. This is true for everyone, but is especially critical for the mother eating [and drinking] for two. A reusable water bottle is a great tool, and the soon-to-be new mom will stay healthy and hydrated.

Tip: Be sure to add a great deal of folic acid to your diet while pregnant. Spinach is a great source of folic acid, and it also provides useful iron.

For the woman with very severe morning sickness, acupuncture may be a great way to get relief. The patient should discuss this with her doctor, and find an innovative way to get relief. Typically, acupuncture does not have a lot of side effects, so it would be good to give it a try.

Tip: Is a little one on the way? Considering breastfeeding? When breastfeeding in a public place, do you want privacy? Buy nursing clothes and do both! There are places that sell outfits you can use to hide breastfeeding in public. This means that you can breastfeed without anyone realizing.

Eating crackers and protein [meat, dairy, beans] can often ease morning sickness symptoms. This varies for woman to woman, but she should be paying attention to her diet and could find out if some dietary changes are in order. Again, the doctor can give some insight in this area, and perhaps different foods or supplements are advisable.

Tip: Do not be scared to turn down social invites if you are pregnant and not feeling well. Your family and friends are going to understand that when you're pregnant, you have some special needs.

Prenatal vitamins, as well as other vitamins, are absorbed better when they are taken in the evening. It gives the body time to slowly and surely absorb the extra nutrition. Vitamins can sometimes trigger morning sickness, so the new mom will want to follow this easy tip.

Tip: When you are pregnant, use a stronger sunscreen when you are outdoors. Your skin is more sensitive when expecting.

The rule of thumb about calling the doctor - you will know deep down if something is wrong, call the doctor then. Obstetricians and their office staff are very used to handling phone calls and will be very helpful. New moms often talk with other new moms, and this can give a great deal of insight. In fact, morning sickness cures can be discovered easily this way.
