Taking Care Of Your Asthma

When you find out you have asthma it can be a tough thing to grasp. You may think that it is impossible for you to get asthma, but it can happen to anyone. You might have had asthma for many years and not have realized it until recently when you got a check up at a doctor. The good thing is that you now know you have asthma, so you can now do your best to manage it so you don't have a severe attack one day. Living with asthma takes a little change in life and preparation, but it's worth it for your health.

Quit smoking if you find out you have asthma. If you have been smoking for awhile and thought that your cough was simply smoker's cough, then you were seriously confused. You have just been hurting your lungs a great deal, and now is the time to quit. Help your body quit by using nicotine patches and slowly getting rid of the nicotine in your body. You have to take quitting smoking seriously because if you don't you could have a terrible asthma attack one day.

Tip: A dehumidifier can help ease your asthma symptoms. The wettest season is typically the season when you experience the worst asthma aggravation.

Keep warm in colder weather, you don't want to expose your chest to the cold. You do not want to expose your chest to cold weather because this can trigger an asthma attack. Try to always keep a jacket around so that you know you can keep warm at all times. It is usually wise to wear a scarf in the colder months of the year. Do not be shy to ask your friends or family members for a sweater or jacket if it is cold outside and you don't have anything to keep your warm. Your health is the number one concern, so do whatever it takes to stay warm.

Start sleeping on your side to help the airflow in your body while you sleep. A lot of people with asthma find themselves coughing in the middle of the night. All of the dust particles floating in the air, mixed with their throat muscles collapsing prevents air from properly flowing down to their lungs. Sleep on your side and your throat muscles will open up which will allow more air to flow through to your lungs.

Tip: Know, and make sure your friends and your family know first aid for asthma attacks. This will ensure that in case of an emergency, the people around you are likely to know how to handle the situation properly.

Get regular check ups from the doctor to assess how your asthma condition is progressing. You want to see if anything else pops up, and to check if your lungs are doing any better or any worse. It's always a wise idea to get a regular checkup so you will know if you should make any changes to your daily life.

After awhile of living with asthma, it becomes natural to take precautions. In all reality, you don't have to change your life around all that much after you figure out you have asthma; you just have to be a little careful at times. Utilize the fact that you gained a good amount of knowledge today, and in time you'll be grateful for all of the information that was presented when you can live a normal life with asthma.
