If you don't, then you need to find out for sure. Continue reading, and think about these winterizing tips concerning your plumbing.

Tip: If your pipes are so noisy that they sound like squeaking or hammering, you can easily solve this problem. Those pipes will need to be anchored if they are exposed.

The first thing you have to do is to think about the exposed pipes, faucets and any garden hoses in your yard. You don't want to just detach the garden hoses because they will freeze on their own as well sitting in your yard. You will be buying new garden hoses. You also definitely do not want to leave them attached to any pipes. Third, you must make sure all exposes pipes and faucets are covered with pipe insulation. You can buy this at your local hardware store or even at a place like Walmart.

Tip: You should have your septic tank pumped once every five years for best performance. Doing this prevents any sediment from getting built up within the tank, which causes a backup in your home or causes your entire septic system to fail.

Consider the fact that you need your water heater serviced before winter time. If it breaks down during winter, of course you can get it fixed. But, what if you don't catch it in time? It can create a problem for you and in fact many problems. You could end up with freezing and busting pipes all over your home. It's better to know how your water heater is doing prior to the start of winter.

Tip: If a plunger is ineffective, you might be able to do the trick with a bucket of warm water. The water should go down, and you can pour another bucket of water if the toilet is still clogged.

Make sure that not only you but the people living inside your home are also aware of what should be done. For instance, it's a good idea to keep faucets with a drip but ONLY a drip. This prevents pipes and faucets in your home from freezing up, and if you're the only one keeping this happening, then it's not going to do you any good. You've got to make sure everyone in the home is up on what is going on with protecting the plumbing during the winter.

Tip: Never reach into your garbage disposal with bare hands, even if there is a serious problem with it. Even when the garbage disposal is turned off they can be dangerous.

Do you leave your garage door open at times during the winter? If you do, then you have to worry about what is inside your garage. Every garage is different, so you should make sure that you have everything protected. Is your water heater in your garage? What about any pipes? Exposed pipes left for hours to the outside elements can end up costing you tons of money.

Tip: You can easily see if there are any serious damages caused by leaks by checking if the floor is soft around toilets. Straddle your toilet by rocking it from foot to foot to see if there's any weakening or softness on the floor below you.

Think logically about all parts of your home. If you try to take the necessary precautions, then you're going to get somewhere. If you put no thought into the matter, then you're just asking for it. Necessary precautions must be taken no matter what home you live in, in order to keep your home's plumbing protected during the winter.

Think about all the ideas that have been presented here. If you've made it through winters in the past without winterizing your plumbing, then you're lucky or live in a tropical climate. You must take the necessary steps to prevent your pipes from freezing and your whole livelihood and comfort level being jeopardized during the winter, as well as your bank account.
