Knowhow-Now Article

No doubt you will have heard of the sorts of people who are maths prodigies, their performance outstripping the rest of us by miles. One such prodigy is Shakuntala Devi.

She has travelled the world giving demonstrations of her mathematical talents.

Shakuntra is a role model for all of us in showing us how the right mind-set in regard to numbers can help in teaching maths and, as it is a particular focus of this article, times tables to your children.

An example of her skills can be found in the record books.

She multiplied two 13 digit numbers to give the correct answer of ; 18,947,668,177,995,426,462,773,730

Not only was she able to do the calculation, she was able to do it, know the answer and write it down in just 28 seconds.

She says in her own words “At three I fell in love with numbers. It was sheer ecstasy for me to do sums and get the right answers. Numbers where toys with which I could play.”

The fact that as a young child a major factor for this maths prodigy was that she fell in love with numbers gives us a pointer as to how we can help our children with their maths and in particular the times tables.

If your children loved numbers and loved maths do you think they would perform better at school and in maths in general and of course in knowing the answers to the times tables?

It is possible for your children to really, really like and enjoy numbers through learning times tables.

There is a simple fun method by which your children can easily know the answers to the times tables. By consistently getting the answers right with Times Tables your children will be inspired to love maths in general.

The key is to bring in imagination, colour, art and movement into their early experiences of number and maths including times tables.

We often have a view of what a genius is like. A few years after her world record I was lucky enough to meet an Shakuntra and I found her to be very pleasant down to earth lady.

To put it another way she was a maths prodigy, yes, and also a lovely individual.

Something that Shakuntala Devi can do is to see patterns in the numbers.

One such pattern to do with the eleven times table is taken here from her book – Figuring.

Would you be able to easily and quickly work out the answer to 33 times 11. Easy when you know the pattern. When you add three to three you get the number six. Now put the answer six in the middle of thirty three. So, what is the answer? It's three hundred and sixty three. Easy? Yes!

Patterns help children make what are apparently difficult sums much easier.

Your children can feel like geniuses when they have a method that shows them how to have fun and really enjoy numbers and also shows them the amazing patterns behind numbers.

Do you want your children to love maths just as Shakuntala Devi learned to do. Using the right method makes learning the times tables fun and easy and can be a key to a love of numbers with children.
