Knowhow-Now Article

Often overlooked in favour of more popular city break destinations such as Bath, Manchester and Newcastle, Bristol should not be discounted from one of the best places in the UK to visit for a weekend holiday.

Over the past decade Bristol has undergone an amazing transformation from industrial centre to a city of culture, cuisine and many attractions. Packed with museums, art galleries, swanky bars and contemporary restaurants and an emerging music and nightlife scene, Bristol is a great choice for a city break destination. Here are some of the best things to see and do in the city…

Watershed

Found on the newly polished up harbour, the Watershed is a centre of culture. This media centre aims to promote creativity within the Bristol community. Here you can catch a range of the city's emerging talent, with a programme of independent film, digital media, events and music in the evenings. The Watershed is best visited at night when the bar comes alive with the city's creative types and you can pick up a drink and a bite to eat.

The Matthew

One of Bristol's must see sights is The Matthew; a reconstruction of the 1497 ship used by John Cabot when he discovered Newfoundland and became the first European to step onto the American mainland. Nowadays you can visit the ship and even hop on board for a trip around the harbour or even further afield during the summer months.

Berkeley Castle

Escape to the beautiful Cotswolds and visit the stunning Berkeley Castle. This historical gem dates back to 1117 and the Berkeley family still call the castle home today. Inside you will find rare paintings by the English and Dutch masters, whilst famous Berkeley silver is on display in the dining room. Don't forget to pay a visit to the lovely tea room where you can taste some delicious homemade cakes. The grounds of the castle are equally beautiful and here you will find a tropical butterfly house within the walled garden.

Bristol Museum and Art Gallery

With an impressive 19 galleries over 3 floors, the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery is a must see on your city break in Bristol. Taking you on a journey through ancient civilisations, intriguing cultures and human invention, the gallery is a great educational day out for all the family.

A taste of luxury

For a little pampering on your city break, why not book into one of the citys’ many top spas. Find your perfect Bristol hotel and relax after a day of enjoying the city.
