Men’s fashion has come on leaps and bounds over the last decade. Instead of relying on t-shirts and jeans, men across the UK have discovered the pleasures of dressing well and looking good en masse. This trend owes no small part to the influence of celebrities. So which celebrities are the best dressed men of the decade?
Undoubtedly, Johnny Depp is a frontrunner. In the early 1990s, the Pirates of the Caribbean star was likely to be photographed in grunge-inspired attire: ripped jeans, baggy t-shirts and beanies. But in the last decade, he’s graduated to a more mature look. These days, he’s more likely to turn up to a film premiere in a chic three-piece suit and his signature fedora hat. As a result, he’s been a huge influence on the current trend for the three-piece, although – perhaps in homage to his grunge days - Depp tends to wear his suits a little baggier than the precise tailoring favoured on the catwalks.
Like Depp, actor Ryan Gosling is celebrated in the media for his keen sense of fashion – though, naturally, his pristine good looks attract a lot of the attention as well. In 2011, The Huffington Post dubbed Gosling the Best Dressed Man of the year and it’s no surprise why. Gosling is frequently pictured in sharply tailored suits and alluring dinner jackets on the red carpet. But he’s also a master of the casual get-up. In Cannes 2011, he made fashion headlines in a beautiful understated outfit by Salvatore Ferragamo: crisp white chinos, a loose blue shirt and two-tone white and blue brogues. He also wore a stunning blue suit by Ferragamo at the LA premiere of his film Drive last year, and it’s outfits like these that make him one of Hollywood’s most photographed men.
In the UK, our male fashion icons tend to come from the music industry rather than films. Major influencers in the last few years include Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner, Kasabian singer Serge Pizzorno and legendary Oasis brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher. But the most exciting addition to the music-fashion scene this decade is Labrinth. This rapper, musician and record producer is as comfortable in suits as he is in a leather jacket and jeans.
But Labrinth has become particularly well-known for popularising ‘geek chic’, typically characterised by a bright shirt buttoned up to the collar, paired with a bow-tie, a cardigan and straight-legged trousers. It’s a fairly easy look to re-create if you’re tall and lean, and looks great with brogues, boat shoes or even wingtips for a formal occasion. Or, for a more definitive edge, wear with high tops or doc martens to really stand out.
