Knowhow-Now Article

Despite being sometimes confused with Venice in Italy, Vienna is the capital of Austria. Vienna has been described as ‘The City of Dreams’ as it played home to the infamous Sigmund Freud who analysed dreams as part of his psychological research. This country is situated close to the borders of Hungary and Slovakia and has roots on both Celtic and Roman heritage making it a diverse country that most visitors feel some sort of an affinity with. Knowing the best tourist attractions, the best accommodation to stay in and what to expect from your start in Vienna can be good preparation towards making your visit a memorable one.

Tourist attractions in Vienna are endless from monuments to several museums and galleries as well as outdoor centres. The vast abundance of choice in attractions will mean that you will have lots to do during the day and even night depending on where your interests lie. There are a few attractions that you should make an effort to see before you leave however. The Schönbrunn Palace is a real and well preserved set of buildings that once served as a home for Austrian royals. Surrounded by a beautiful, well maintained park and full of interesting historical facts, it is a great attraction for those interested in lineage and luxurious surroundings. The Naschmarkt is the most historic market in Vienna and dates back to the 16th century. It stands apart from the several other markets as it sits on top of a roofed over river and sells everything from unique foods to vintage and heritage fashion and trinket items.

Getting by in Vienna will not be difficult. The main differences from your own home country will be seen most distinctly in the food and culture. The food is rich in exotic ingredients like cheeses, meats and extraordinary desserts and pastries. If you are not allergic to any specific ingredient then it is a good experience to try as much of the local and national food as possible to truly get the taste of Vienna. The culture is rich in heritage, and there are plenty of galleries which show off the fine talent that Vienna has to offer. Visiting one of these is a good way to get a sense of the country’s development and history.

If you are looking for a place to stay whilst in Austria, you should probably stay in a hotel in Vienna to be sure that you're close to all of the major attractions that you have to be.

The language spoken there is German so you should brush up on some local phrases and perhaps purchase a phrase book for times when you may need directions to an attraction or restaurant in times of emergency. Realising that there will be many different types of new food is also very important, so if you are allergic to anything make sure that you learn the German phrase on how to notify waiters about this. After preparing for your trip to Vienna and considering these guidelines you are sure to cover all the bases in Vienna. The locals will make your experience a good one if you show you are interested in their culture.
