Dealing with the panic attacks
When the young child experiences a panic attack, they are likely to be very unpredictable. In dealing with the panic attacks in young children, therefore one has to think about their own experiences where they have gone through such attacks. The adult dealing with such a child should remain calm and not respond to the outbursts of the child.
The adult should not raise their voice if the child is terror struck in a panic attack. In addition, the panic attacks in young children make them irrational so that trying to speak to them in that instance will prove futile. One should therefore only speak to the young child after they get calm. Enquire the cause of the panic attack and reassure the child that they are not suffering from a strange disease and that there is a cure for their condition.
Panic attacks in young children may be as a result of being in a particular place. If this is the case, move the child away from such a place and keep them calm so that they do not take irrational actions that can endanger their lives. Talk to the child about normal things and use relaxation techniques to keep them calm.
The symptoms of panic attacks in children include screaming in fear and withdrawal from interacting with people. One should not expose the child’s condition to people without his or her permission since this may further aggravate the panic attacks. Panic attacks in young children are likely to last only for a short while but may leave the child drained. It is important therefore to talk to the child and let them know that they are normal and that they are still worthy of respect.
Once the child is calm it is now possible to enquire the frequency with which the panic attacks occur and any situation that triggers them. Give the child a drink to sip. The drink should not contain any caffeine since such drinks aggravate the situation. Seek the medication for the panic attacks in young children.
