If you're in search of royal elegance and fairy tale palaces on your European break, Vienna could be the ideal destination. Austria's historic capital was once the seat of the vast Hapsburg Empire, which was a dominant force in Central Europe for more than six centuries. An empire with this level of influence doesn't vanish without a trace, and Vienna's palaces and royal residences are its proud legacy.

The most famous royal palace in Vienna is undoubtedly Schoenbrunn, which contains over 1,400 rooms as well as spectacular gardens outside. This palace has witnessed many key moments throughout history, from its original use as a summer retreat for the Hapsburgs to the secret meeting between Kennedy and Kruschev at the height of the Cold War.

Schoenbrunn Palace was built to rival Versailles, so it should come as no surprise that its architecture is particularly striking - even in a city so blessed with architectural wonders as Vienna. This World Heritage Site can be visited throughout the year, and is a must on any sightseeing or cultural trip to the city - from the extravagant rococo décor and art collections inside to attractions within the palace grounds, such as the Carriage Museum and Palace Zoo, which can be perfect for days out with the family.

Taking a carriage ride around the palace can be the best way to take in its splendour, and depending on the time of your visit, you may be able to enjoy a range of experiences - including classical performances by the Palace Orchestra in the Orangery. There are also plenty of eating options on the site, from quick bites in the Court Bakery to meals at nearby restaurants.

Whenever you're staying in hotels in Vienna, you likely won't be too far from one of its palaces. Other great options include the Hofburg Palace, which gives an insight into the life and habits of royalty by displaying many of the prized belongings of the Hapsburg family - including kitchenware in the Imperial Silver & Porcelain Collection and a stunning collection of crown jewels in the treasury.

Other palaces have now been converted into public institutions, such as Schloss Belvedere which now houses an impressive art gallery. To escape the crowds of the city, you can also enjoy sweeping views over Vienna and the surrounding countryside by taking a trip to Schloss Wilhelminenberg, located at the top of Gallitzinberg hill.
