Knowhow-Now Article

According to recent research, 80 per cent of people could save money on their energy supplies. The average figure for potential savings when people shop around for their gas and electricity is £170. In some cases the figure has been much higher, so it is clear to see that you can indeed save money on gas if you change suppliers.

It is important to note that all homes are different. The amount you will typically spend on gas will depend on how many people live in your home, how much gas you use and which supplier you are currently with. If you are signed up for the most expensive tariff available and you switch to the cheapest, you could be in line to save a three figure sum each year. The actual amount you'll save by switching suppliers could be smaller however - it all depends on how much you are paying now and how much cheaper your new tariff will be.

The point to remember is that, according to the latest research, 80 per cent of people don’t shop around. If you fall into this group, you can almost certainly save money every month by switching to a new gas company.

If you are considering switching suppliers, you should begin by assessing your current bill. This will tell you the rates you pay at present for your gas supply and how much gas you are using. You will need this information in order to compare your current service to any others you are thinking of switching to. The best way to reduce your bills by the greatest amount is to reduce the amount of gas you use. For example, putting a thermostat on your gas central heating and reducing the temperature by a degree or two can make a bigger difference to your bill than you might think.

Next, it’s time to have a look around and see what the current gas rates from other providers are. It might also help to consider whether you might be better off on a fixed tariff, since this will protect you from increases in the price of gas in the future. Another way to save money is to look for dual fuel deals, which means you will get your electricity from the same company for a slightly lower fee.

As you can see, the chances of saving money on your gas bills can be quite high. All it takes is to know what you are paying now, and to see which of the gas suppliers will be able to beat that price. You may find that there are better deals out there than you might think and all you have to do is go out and find them.
