We all grow bored of our look from time to time, and like the Batman films, our looks could all do with a reboot every ten years. Thankfully getting a whole new style doesn’t mean spending hundreds of bucks on clothes you’re not sure you’ll like. With these tips you can start small, and find the right style for you on a budget.
Plain Tees
As painful as it may sound, it’s time to throw out the old Star Wars and heavy metal t-shirts. If you feel that your look needs a reboot, logos should be the first thing to go. Instead fill your t-shirt drawer with plain tees in black and white. Keeping it neutral will mean that you can wear the t-shirts with different accessories and experiment with a variety of looks. Try to find fitted tees; we’re not talking skin-tight here, but a well fitted tee will stop you from looking boxy and will give you a more grown-up look.
Re-purpose
Not all of your old clothes will be totally useless. Sift through everything in your wardrobe before throwing it out,and you might find some pieces that will still work with your new style. For example, a suit jacket can be repurposed as a blazer and worn over jeans and a tee. Try not to be too sentimental, however; cluttering up your wardrobe with old clothes can make it easy to fall into your old clothing habits and forget that you’re attempting to freshen up your style.
Jeans
Say what you like about men's jeans, but they’re one wardrobe staple that always get a work out. How long have you owned your favourite pair of jeans? If the denim’s fading and your knees are visible then it’s definitely time to invest in a new pair. A solid coloured, well fitted pair of jeans will work wonders for your style and may be the only purchase you need to give your look an update.
Accessorize
The easiest way to keep your look fresh without breaking the bank is to accessorise. It may seem that women have more opportunities to accessorise than men, but that’s not true. Men just need to be smart about it. You can completely change the tone of a plain t-shirt and jeans by adding accessories: a nice watch and a pair of sunglasses give the impression of a rich guy slumming it, while bracelets and a fedora give a laid back musician vibe. Next time you’re clothes shopping, spend some time in the accessories section and let your imagination run wild. Even a nicely coloured pair of sneakers can inject some personality into an otherwise bland look.
