Knowhow-Now Article

The Scottish capital of Edinburgh is a truly magical tourist destination that attracts visitors from across the globe year in and year out. An event that helped to put Edinburgh on the international map is the annual Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which takes place every August. If you're a fan of comedy and would like to visit Edinburgh, consider booking your holiday to coincide with the world-famous festival. However, despite the wide range of visitors that the Fringe attracts every year, it's important to note that Edinburgh has something to offer all year round. No matter what time of year you visit the charming city, Edinburgh has something fascinating waiting around every corner.

Firstly, a visit to Edinburgh wouldn't be complete without a tour of its most famous landmark - the Edinburgh Castle. A former fortress, this majestic building dates back to 600 AD and is in near perfect condition. The castle looks over the city from its position on 'the mound,' so you shouldn't have any difficulty finding your way to the stunning landmark. For a truly unique experience, book tickets to watch the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, which takes place at the castle every August.

If walking up and down Edinburgh's hills isn't enough exercise for you, a climb up the beautiful Arthur's Seat is an ideal way to spend an afternoon. Located at the east end of the city near Holyrood Palace, Arthur's Seat is a favourite among tourists and locals alike. Though the hill may seem daunting, it's only about a 20-minute climb to the top. While you stand on its windy peak, you're treated to panoramic views of the Edinburgh skyline and the surrounding sea.

After a long day of sightseeing, you can refuel at one of Edinburgh's cosy pubs or restaurants. The Grassmarket area of the city is home to several great pubs offering the traditional Scottish dish - haggis, neeps and tatties. Or, for a great cup of coffee and some delicious Scottish shortbread, grab a seat at the legendary Elephant House café, where Harry Potter author JK Rowling famously wrote her ideas for the book series on a napkin.

If you have any time left in your schedule, a climb up the impressive Sir Walter Scott monument is one of the best ways to take in Edinburgh's incredible scenery. However, be prepared for a dizzying journey up the monument's narrow winding staircases!

As you can see, Edinburgh has a lot of truly unique attractions on offer. Though staying in the city centre is ideal, the city is so compact that any Edinburgh hotel will likely be just a short walk away from the Royal Mile or Princes Street. Adding to the convenience is Edinburgh's superb bus system, which has won awards for being one of the best bus systems in Europe, so it's safe to say that getting around the city won't be difficult even if you don't fancy walking.
