There are a number of different beliefs on the actual history of blues music. One thing for sure though is that it originated from African American communities from the southern part of the United States. Initially they were chants and rhymes from Negros subject to laborious activities. These songs served as an outlet for these people who were oppressed during this period. They were treated as slaves who had no right to a decent life and ended up voicing their frustrations while they worked. At that time they would work the whole day, this was actually the only thing they were allowed to do. This gave them the opportunity to be true and honest about their feelings and they expressed this through their songs.
The blues music started during the late 1800’s but the first officially recorded track was on 1912. ”Dallas Blues” made its debut which was performed by Hart Wand. The irony of it all is that Hart Wand was a white man singing “black” music. This somewhat humorous irony was because of the existing oppression against African Americans at that time. The people responsible for the birth of this kind of music were not allowed to offifially represent it. It took eight years before an African American would actually record an official blues track. It was a track by Mamie Smith entitled “Crazy Blues.” It was only then that an African American was able to officially be a part of the history of blues music.
The history of blues music is poorly documented because of racial discrimination and the actual literacy of the African American community at that time. Many could not even write their own names, but this did not stop them from creating one of the most soulful genres in music today.
The extreme conditions that the African Americans were subject to was what pushed them to look deep within themselves and release their frustrations through the expression of music. The history of blues music is one that starts off with a lot of grief, but in the end it was the ones who thrived and were true to themselves that came out winners.
