Knowhow-Now Article

Some multiplication facts are also tricks that may help students in the quest for faster factoring without memorization for the numbers one through twelve.

The easiest multiplication rule to remember is the factors of one, which is that any number multiplied by one remains the same.

For the number two, you can add the multiplying number to itself, such as: 2x5=10 and 5+5=10.

For the number three, a quick trick can help check the accuracy of your work, but will not speed up the multiplication.

Every multiplication answer of three will add up to three, six, or nine, if an answer does not add up to one of these numbers, then it is incorrect; for example: 2x3=6 and 3+3=6, or 3x12=36 and 3+6=9.

One and zero are easy multiples to memorize, and five is just as simple.

Five has multiples that are exactly five numbers lower or higher than the next or last factored multiple, for example: 0x5=0, 1x5=5, 2x5=10, and the addition proving this is, 0+5=5, 5+5=10, and 10+5=15.

Six has a fun trick for multiplication with even numbers.

The answer from multiplying an even number with six will always end in the same number as the multiplier, 6x2=12, and 6x8=48.

The next number with a multiplication trick is nine; in fact nine has a few twists up its sleeve. When multiplying by nine, one can factor what the answer will be by first multiplying by ten, and then subtracting the multiplying number, 9x3=10x3-3.

Another quick trick is to revert back to the previous number and then count up to nine, 9x3=27, and 3-1=2, 2+7=9, the answer is 27; once again, 9x4=36, and 4-1=3, 3+6=9.

The multiplication tables of ten are as easy to learn as adding a zero to the number that is being multiplied: 10x2=20, 10x9=90, and 10x15=150.

For the number eleven, all one need to is to write the double of the multiplied number (for all whole numbers up to nine); for example, 2x11=22 and 5x11=55.

Eleven carries on with another multiplication trick for the numbers ten through eighteen.Write the sum of the number being multiplied by eleven between the number itself, 11x17=1 (1+7) 7, 187.

Recall the multiplication table for ten to reveal a multiplication trick for the number twelve.First multiply a number by ten by adding a zero, and then multiply the number by two; add them together to arrive at the answer: 12x5=60 and (10x5) + (2x5) =60.

These multiplication tricks and tips can take a learning experience beyond flash cards, which will help in faster recall in real life applications and well as in examination.
