Knowhow-Now Article

If the idea of driving conjures up dull motorway journeys and stressful traffic jams back home, you might not have considered driving while abroad. But many countries in Europe offer a very different driving experience to the UK, and heading out on the open road can be the best way to see these countries on your own time schedule, without having to rely on temperamental public transport.

Many places in Europe can be easily accessed by car from the UK, whether you're taking your own car across or under the Channel, or you pick up a hire car from the airport when you arrive. With an EU passport and the right driver's licence, you won't face any problems crossing borders and can see Europe's sights at your leisure, as well as save money.

Spain has always been one of the most popular countries for breaks away from Britain, but not so many people appreciate its excellent driving opportunities, particularly in areas such as Santander, which is easily reached by boat from Plymouth. This relatively small location tends to be overlooked by tourists, which will give you and your fellow travellers more opportunities to soak up authentic Spanish culture without the crowds, as well as enjoying a range of activities from mountain biking and hiking in the Picos de Europa to sunbathing on El Sardinero beach, just a short drive away.

The French region of Brittany offers many opportunities for driving holidays, and you'll have the chance to try many of the area's famous culinary options. The historic port town of Roscoff is a great stopping point shortly after the ferry trip, and this relatively small town has two Michelin-starred restaurants. Elsewhere in France, the Cotentin peninsula in Normandy features a scenic coastal road down to the Bay of Mont St-Michel, which can be a great spot for photo opportunities and getting away from the cities.

Belgium is another undiscovered gem, especially when it comes to driving routes such as the N51, which offers access to the historic mining complex of Grand Hornu, now a contemporary art museum. From nearby Mons, you can take the E42 towards Liège to enjoy more cultural experiences at sites such as the BPS22 gallery and Grand Curtius Museum. Also, some of the finest food in the country can be found along the road to Antwerp. Arranging car rental in Europe before you set off can help you find the best rates and ensure your holiday goes without a hitch.
