Who doesn’t dream of romancing in Paris, skiing in the beautiful slopes of the Alps, or basking in the beauty, history, and taste of the Mediterranean? By going on a backpacking travel in Europe, the travel can be cheaper, but just like any adventure, a little riskier. To beat those odds, make plan and incorporate some wise and sensible tips to ensure a safe and successful travel. Therefore, before lacing up your hiking boot string and heading off in one of those marvelous European destinations take stock of what you need to know, to plan for and to do.
• Decide on your destination in Europe.Where do you dream of going? What is it that you want most to do? Who will you be traveling with or are you going solo? Do you want some cheap thrills? You can go to Eastern Europe (Sofia, Budapest) for dirt-cheap excitement. You can go to the Amalfi Coast, but pick a base among the cheaper fishing villages. Amsterdam is totally laidback and interesting. If you’re traveling in October, you could go to Germany and take part in their Oktoberfest. Why don’t you go for sightseeing adventure on board Europe’s most extensive rail system?
• Know what you want to do. This can help you decide where you will be going and what you will be packing. If you want to ski in Norway or the Alps, get the right gear for that kind of adventure. Stay off piste if you want to save or go cross-country and stay in roadside hostels. If you have no gears or lack skiing skills, there are many other alternatives like snowshoeing or snowmobiling.
• Set your backpacking budget. Know how much you can afford and work out your plans based on the budget. There are many ways to save a dollar here and there. It can start with your mode of transport, type of adventure, places to sleep and to eat. You can still have a blast despite limited budget; just research and plan your travel long before you set off to your destination.
• Get protected. Buy a backpacking travel insurance that has an adequate cover. Scrimping cannot be done as far as insurance is concerned. You have to consider where you are going and the kind of risks you are exposed to. When you are offered a cheap insurance, read the fine prints. This is where you can see the stipulations, inclusions, and exclusions. Do not buy a cheap insurance that will compromise your safety.
• Consider traveling within Europe using rail passes. If you are a student, there are discounts you can avail of. There are many great deals that you can get if you will do your homework. Understand the differences between Eurail passes and rail tickets to get the better deal. Learn about night trains, express trains, and types of accommodations on board. There are many ways to save if you know the differences.
• Bring a phrasebook of the languages in the places you plan on visiting. This can make your life a little bit easier with the favors and information you can get from the locals. It can be a money saver or a lifesaver even. Find out how to say thank you, how much, where the bus or train station is, help, etc. Trying to speak in the vernacular would help you gain warm appreciation from the locals. It will help a lot too if you can learn about some customs and traditions to show respect to the people in the place. This can help you win some friends and make your travel more interesting and safer.
If you want adventure, backpacking travel in Europe is a good place to have it with its diverse history, topography, cuisine, language, and attractions. Backpacking is always risky, but planning well can bring you home safely.
