Knowhow-Now Article

Whether you're in Alabama's capital for business or for pleasure, you're sure to enjoy a multitude of attractions that Montgomery has to offer. For those with a partiality to enjoy a more sophisticated side of Montgomery, you might wish to visit the city’s premier center for art and architecture. Here, at The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA), you will bear witness to an array of art exhibitions close to America's heart. Founded in 1930, the MMFA focuses its gallery presentation around 19th and 20th century American painting and sculpture. The museum is consistently switching temporary exhibits to capture the attention of its state residents and out of town visitors.

Located at 1 Museum Drive in Montgomery, the museum is positioned right off of Eastern Boulevard. There is no general admission to enter the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts as it is a department of the City of Montgomery, and as such is supported by funds from the city. The free price tag is surely no indicator of the museum’s overall quality as this museum boasts over 1,000 pieces of art and has been praised continuously for its educational practices. The museum entertains a variety of different learning experiences that cater to all ages. Some of these experiences include: Learning to Look at American Art, Youth and Family Learning, and programs dedicated to seniors. For all individuals with special needs hoping to participate in a tour, fret not, the museum is accessible to all and accommodations can be made. The museum is easily accessible by wheelchair as well.

While the general admission to the MMFA is free and self-guided tours are very practical, there is a fee for guided tours for all guests looking to get a more complete understanding of all MMFA’s art pieces. These tours must be reserved in advanced and there is a 15 dollar non-refundable deposit to hold all reservations. Visitors travelling from outside of the city might be prudent enough to find a hotel nearby the museum.

The Museums hours of operation are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 10 A.M. to 5 P.M.; Thursday, 10 A.M. to 9 P.M. and Sunday, 12 P.M. to 5 P.M. The Museum galleries are closed on Mondays. Office hours are from 8 A.M. to 5 P.M. Monday through Friday. The Museum is closed on the following national holidays: Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.
