You don’t need to spend great wads of cash to impress a woman. If you’re looking for a meaningful present, find a gift for your girlfriend that shows you’ve put a lot of thought in to who she is or what she really wants.

Technology may have moved on, but the mix tape will always remain a perennial romantic classic. Go old-school if you have the equipment or make a mix CD—somehow emailing a playlist just doesn’t quite cut it. Find the song that was playing when you had your first kiss, a song with her name in it, or just the song that embodies how you feel about her. Bonus points for designing the tape case or CD cover yourself!

Get something engraved. If it’s a larger thing—such as a hipflask—you can normally get this done cheaply at your local key cutter. For a delicate watch or bracelet, you’ll need to go to a jeweler. It doesn’t need to just be done with her name either. Consider a word or phrase that means something special to the two of you, like the name of the place you met and the date, or the name of the first place you went on holiday together.

Why not have a piece of space named after her? At the International Star Registry you can name a star after someone, letting you think of each other every time you look up at the night sky. If she’s not interested in space, you could give some money to a zoo or charity to adopt an animal she likes in her name instead.

If you’re feeling creative, why not make a special piece of art just for her? You don’t need to be an expert artist to draw a funny comic strip starring your alter-egos or a world-class novelist to make up a little story. If you’re stuck for words, try writing a romantic haiku—this Japanese style of poem is just seventeen syllables long.

Instead of buying an expensive meal, put together a hamper or basket with all the little things she likes. You could include a miniature bottle of her favourite spirit, a packet of her favourite flavour of crisps, a wedge of her favourite cheese, or anything else you like. You could even get a bar of personalized chocolate made up with her name on it. In fact, delicious things are always appreciated. You could learn to cook her favourite meal and surprise her with it one night.

By choosing things that have personal significance to your girlfriend, you’ll reveal yourself to be a thoughtful guy. Don’t worry too much or over-think it! Just take the time to put a bit of thought in, and find the right personalised gift for your girl.
