Knowhow-Now Article

Driving using a trailer is not that taxing, however if you are completely new to pulling a trailer then it can be a little over-whelming. The number one problem is becoming comfortable with the added length of the trailer and how to tow on the road if you have a new vehicle.

So if this sounds familiar and you are going on a trip, then here are a few tips to remember to ensure you have a more secure road trip in your Honda and feel more in control of your vehicle, as compiled by www.motorleasing.com.

1) Firstly, you should take a look through the manual. Trailers or caravans should have a manual or maybe just a safety sticker on the side, which will tell you what size car you need to safely tow your trailer. You should also check the Honda manual as you don't want to overload your Honda's engine.

2) Next, check the trailer to see if it has a hitch package. This package is a facility to attach the trailer electronics to the battery of your car. You really do need this system as it powers the rear lights on your trailer or caravan, which lets other drivers know that you are on the road.

3) Before you set off take the time to test what you can see from your window. This could involve extension gadgets that can fix to your side mirrors and allow you to have a better view of your trailer and also allow you to have a view of any vehicles that may be driving at the side or even behind you. The last thing you would like to do is cause a serious crash that may injure other road users.

4) Before setting off do a safety inspection. This will ensure that everything is safe and connected correctly. It will include: checking hitch wiring is long enough to account for turns, checking the pressure of tyres, attaching the stabilizer and equalizer, making sure the trailer or caravan is balanced and place the trailer tongue into the correct position.

5) Before setting off have a thorough inspection of all of your cases and belongings. It is important that you take this precaution as you don't want to arrive and be surprised to find all your holiday gear is broken and shattered into millions of pieces.

6) If you go down a hill then hold your speed. Put your gear stick into a lower gear and then slowly drive down the decline, it is the only safe way to deal with our hilly countryside.

7) When you reverse you should be especially careful and take your time. In the event of steering then the slightest of adjustments on the steering wheel can damage the caravan or camper and destroy the tow bar, making it unusable.

8) Then, when you are driving you need to avoid abrupt or tight turns. Where possible, your driving should be loose and smooth and steering should be made earlier rather than later, this is the best way to make sure you stay safe whilst you are driving.

9) Finally, if you have concerns about your Honda vehicle then it might be a good idea to hire or lease a newer Honda instead. For example, when I went camping I took out a Honda leasing deal from www.motorleasing.com that was great for towing my caravan during my holiday.

By sticking to the advice given above you should have a really enjoyable time during your road trip, irrespective of where you plan to go.
