Having a broken computer is certainly no fun, especially when you are trying to get something done or urgently need to get into your messages to send an email, so it is important to have some idea of what to do in terms of computer repair.
The first thing to do depends very much on how your computer is reacting and whether or not it is actually allowing you to start up the PC, or if the computer is entirely dead. Also, bear in mind that this article is only really looking at computer repair for desktop PC's, so if you have a laptop, then you ought to look for an article that will give you more information on that subject.
If your computer is entirely dead, and there are no lights appearing, and no hint of fans starting up, then this will usually indicate a problem with your power supply. The first thing your computer repair technician would do, and what you can try and do too, is to identify whether it is the power unit itself, or if it is the cable.
You could try borrowing a compatible cable from another computer, or sometimes even the cable from your kettle will be suitable (this is a trick a computer repair technician friend told me), but make sure you check that the power delivered by each cable is the same. If you find it doesn't work with the second cable, it will probably need a new power unit. This can be done at home fairly simply if you are familiar with the workings of a computer, but if not, a visit to a computer repair shop might be best.
If the problem you're having is a crashing of the computer, then try and restart the computer, which is the first point of call in almost all computer repair. It will usually ask you to restart in 'safe mode', and then you can try and run other computer programs to the one you were using when your computer crashed.
If it works normally on other programs, try running the same program again to see if it crashes again. If so, reinstall the software. If you are having repeated problems with various programs, then you may need to take your computer to a computer repair shop.
