Some things never go out of fashion and will look stylish every winter. Here are some top tips on things you should have in your wardrobe that you can pull out every year when the temperature starts to drop.

Woollen scarfs and hats have been around for centuries and are unlikely to ever look silly. You can find them everywhere and anything from a heavy knit to a fine tartan cashmere scarf will keep you both warm and stylish. A good wool hat is also a great way to keep warm and add some colour to your ensemble and remember most of your body heat is lost through your head.

In the winter you want to keep warm and a flannel shirt can be a great option that will look both casual unbuttoned or smart when matched with a tie. Flannel shirts are often brushed to make them soft as well as warm and a nice plaid pattern will always be stylish in winter

Again on the theme of staying warm and timelessly stylish; woollen ties are a great accessory choice for winter. A solid colour works best for plaid and busily patterned shirts, while tartan and plaid wool ties will look great against plainer shirts. Tweed is a good fabric choice for a winter tie and looking through vintage shops is a great idea if you want a tie that will be unique and individual.

For the bottom half corduroy trousers are both warm and stylish, again either as part of a casual or smart-casual look. Try to find corduroy trousers with a reasonably narrow wale (width of stripe) if you want to avoid looking like your old biology teacher.

Your feet are also a place that you need to keep warm, but also a place you can make a style statement, especially if you like to wear high hemmed trousers. Nice woollen socks in either solid bold colours or chunky checks are a great way to add some colour and style below the knee.

A good pair of shoes or boots will keep your feet warm, stylish and steady on the ice. A good pair of leather brogues will always be in fashion, they also tend to keep your feet warm as they have a solid thick sole. Boots are also a winter mainstay, particularly when the weather is really bad and can add a rugged feel if the rest of your outfit is quite smart.

Lastly there is the winter coat. Mens coats come in a variety of styles but if you want a jacket that you can pull out year on year, then you should invest in a good quality wool double breasted top coat that will hug your body and keep you warm.
