Trauma surgery positions require the surgeon to quickly diagnose and surgically treat critically injured patients. These are often cases where the life of the patient is in immediate danger or they may lose a limb or suffer another devastating loss if surgery is not performed immediately. This is a job that is fast paced and very high pressure at times but it can also quite rewarding being on the front line of emergency care.

As a sub-specialty of surgery, trauma surgery positions usually pay toward the top of the pay scale for surgeons. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that trauma surgeons earn between $229,800 and $325,000 annually. Salary.com reports the median salary for open

According to the BLS, the US states that offer the highest salary for surgeons on average are South Dakota, Tennessee, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Those states offering the lowest surgeon salaries on average are California, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Salaries are often higher in rural areas. This is also sometimes true in depressed areas where the average income is low.

The job outlook for trauma surgeons in the US and Canada looks exceptionally good. The BLS reports that the number of
Trauma surgery jobs is expected to grow at a faster pace than for other medical professions at least through 2018. This is due to two factors. Second, it is expected that a higher than average number of trauma surgeons will be retiring over the next decade.

The rate of new surgeon jobs in general is expected to grow more than 26% over the next few years. However, trauma surgeons are in even higher demand so a qualified person should have no trouble finding a job in this field. In fact, the Journal of the American College of Surgeons (JACS) predicted a shortfall of approximately 1500 trauma surgeons by this year (2012) and this number will likely increase even more.
